Guys,

was chatting with someone today about Mb's and he was telling me about how the different models of the period had different width wheels, something I hadn't heard of before.

W123 230's have 5 inch wide wheels
W123 250's have 5 1/2 inch wide wheels
280's in W114/W123/W116 have 6 inch wide wheels, or he may have said 6 1/2 inch wheels, and these cars also have little fins in the wheels to suck air in to cool the wheel and or brakes down.


these are referring to the standard wheel + hubcap setup.

What about with W116's, is there a difference in size within the range? I know from memory 6.9's have a wider Bundt wheel,
What about on other cars within the range?


Lastly can anyone please tell me what is the factory ET for a W116?

As far as I know, the 6.9s had 6.5 in wheels
while the rest had 6 inch (in the bundts)

Hi Des, they have an off-set of 23. There were, indeed, a number of different Bundts to suit the various models, with 6.5 being the norm for 450 & 6.9 116's, as well as most of the 126 range until MB introduced the flat disc "god knows how many holers" that were 7" wide. I think I'm pretty right, but if not, please jump down my throat too hard. Regards Styria

Thanks Styria,

Reason I ask is shortly I would like to look around the wreckers here in the off chance they have a Mercedes with Bundt's on it.
Would like to pickup a set, without having to pay for postage from the mainland.

While colour coded Pentas would look the part for now I think the Bundt's would match the colour of the car nicely.

My 6.9's have 6.5" bundts. I don't know what was the norm for the rest of the world, but South African produced 116's had 6.5" bundts. In fact the 6" ones are pretty rare here.

styria, those mid-80's flat face wheels have 15 holes - same number as Bundts :)

Hi S-Class, you know, I was sure there were more than eight holes, but for the life of mine I couldn't remember the exact number. Thus, I figured that my terminology just about accounted for any number, and that was going to be the correct one ! :D Got out of that one nicely, don't you think ? Regards Styria (the seven inches was also correct - I knew that much)

They were called 15 slotters at the time (and could only be cleaned with a toothbrush) while the ones that replaced them through the 90's (and were much easier to clean) were called 8 slotters for obvious reasons.

I know the two 1979 450's that I possess both have 14 x 6.5 steel wheels but had 205 tyres instead of the 215's fitted to 6.9's.

I do like my 16 inch Penta's though - a great period touch.

Did you ever manage to find another one for a spare?

The 16 type seem impossibly hard to find.

Have seen a few 15 inch sets for sale.

I think you should pack a few sets of 6.5" Bundts in the container ;)
