Steering Box Question

Cleaned up the steering box I acquired the other day,and noticed that it has 2 perished washers in the part that the input shaft attaches too - seem to be made from plastic, a hard rubber or some kine of gasket-like material. Do these need to be replaced if worn?

If so, how? It looks like the pins holding them (which are spread apart to hold them - grommet-style) would need to be drilled to be removed, and then replaced with new ones. Part numbers etc?

Washers are shown in the pic below - one on either side of the small gap on the bottom right protrusion.

That is the rubber mounted flexible joint. It should just have had two pinch bolts - one for the splines on the steering shaft and one for the splines on the steering box.

It should just prise off the splined shaft of the steering box once any pinch bolt has been removed.

Once the rubber has perished it is buggared and produces a lot of slack in the steering.

I tried to purchase one about 3 years ago for my 450 and the agents wanted about $350 for it but I found a good second hand one.

$350 for a steering coupling is robbery. I paid the equivalent of $120 a year ago and I thought that was bad enough.

Yikes - thanks for the info. The load-bearing parts of mine still seem solid (and there is no play in the joint), but the rim around the edge was peeling off, so I thought it might be nice to replace them. Given the above costs, I think they're fine.:)

Hi Lukas, geez, you're learning fast. I have always said 'if it ain't broke, don't replace it'. BTW, I hate to be rude but need to ask you about your pictorial travelogue of Cambodia. I have been waiting with baited breath.

At the moment, we have 6.9 forever on his second trip overseas - just came back from Madrid and, I believe, Seville and I am hoping for some pics from him in due course.

Then the other, one of my favourite turkeys by the name of SELfor50, has more than likely turned into a frozen statue - it's pretty cold "overthere" and have not heard from him for a couple of days. Regards Styria

Pictorial travelogue? Do you mean the blog? It is still up at http://lukasincambodia.blogspot.com, with pictures attached.

If not, did I promise to write a roundup or something?

I don't think SELfor50 is frozen - alcohol is an anti-freeze, isn't it?
