hi all,
can someone tell me please if you can adjust the valve clearance on the M110 280 motor.
I have noisy tappets and given that it is an twin OHC configuration I have reservations.

Sure can! You'll need a special 17mm spanner so you don't dislodge the rocker retainer spring. I used to do this all the time when I worked for MB, but it was a long time ago.... I'd either adjust them when the engine was hot, or stone cold (overnight) & I'd use a jump lead to spin the engines so the rocker arms were positioned correctly. I think they were set to 0.04mm (inlet) & 0.10mm (exhaust) when hot from memory. Be very carefull you don't round off the adjusting nuts, because they can be tight, the hexes are narrow & they'll be covered in hot oil! :eek:

Hi Mark, am I correct in assuming that the special spanner you refer to is in fact a Medrcedes Benz tool ? Or alternatively, could it be purchased from an outside supplier, such as Snap-On or Stahlwille ?

Terquel, without that spanner, you're not in the hunt ! Getting back to Mark (Oversize), I have always been under the impression that tappet clearances were adjusted with engine stone cold - that's how I have always carried out adjustments on the M100 (6.3) engines. You might have some thoughts on this subject matter. Regards Styria

Hi guys, we had settings for hot n cold. It's obviously not practical to only have cold settings if you're required to service a car & it's just driven off the street. It was pretty rare to keep them overnight unless things got more involved. I was careful to make sure the engines were one, or the other & nothing in-between. If I was setting them hot, I'd make sure everything was ready to go & I'd even pre-dissasemble some components if I could, to allow me to remove the rocker cover/s quickly. I think the settings were 0.06mm / 0.10mm hot & 0.04mm / 0.10mm cold. The larger clearances were for the exhaust. Yes I believe the spanner was available through Stahlwille; I'm sure it'd be far cheaper than the MB equivalent. Then again unless you're a dealer I doubt MB would sell you one. :mad:

BTW I found it much better to adjust them cold as you didn't have to worry about the engine cooling down and more importantly, you didn't burn yourself! :D

:D...good thinking Number 1. Rocker covers on 6.3s aren't the easiest to remove, especially the one on the passenger (left) side - again, you have to ask yourself why the Company couldn't have put a little more foresight into planning disassembly procedures - you know, the large bracket that holds the coil, the metal breather pipes for the two rocker covers, the high tension leads.......I am sure you know all about it.
