Valve stem seals on M110 2.8

I have heard these can be changed on the car - ie, no need to remove head - can anyone give me a story?
Have you done it?
What's involved?
I have two cars that smoke a bit, particularly downhill, but otherwise run fine.
Any clues?

Yes they do one cylinder at a time (people do ask...)

And adaptor is used to put compressed air into the spark plug hole, which holds the valves up. Then its easy for someone with the skill / correct tools to take the spring off the valve, replace the valve stem seal, and put the spring back on.

This is another one of those jobs where the cost of labour far outweighs the cost of parts... to change the stem seals in most cases the camshafts have to be removed as well as the followers etc.

The only parts are the stem seals and the cam cover gasket kit.

Thanks, that makes sense, I will see my M-B specialist next week to see if he can do it this way. I don't have the equipment.
