valve stem seals 110 DOHC 6

I can't put it off any longer. Copious blue smoke down hill closed throttle high revs. Engine performs very well , so I don't want to open it. I'm willing to take a punt on the guides still being serviceable. An occasional use car. But I can't find a definite answer as to whether the Cam Box has to come off and if so do I need the special spring compressor. The Valve timing is only 2% retarded , so I'll leave the chain. Compression is 155 all except one at 130 dry. Wet 130 becomes 165. I can live with that as the valves are ok.

P.S. I'll only do it myself as a last resort. Anyone in the Sydney Basin who knows these engines ? ?

Sean, I would seriously consider that you perhaps discuss the matter with Helmet. He is very knowledgeable, and I do believe that you will get quality of workmanship. I sort of suspect that you are familiar with him, but it is up to you to decide which is the best course of action to follow. BTW, is there a chance that we will see you on Sunday ? Hi Styria, to replace the V/S seals I would need the special tool to compress the Valve springs.

Helmet ....I only reconise by his Forum name . Does he have a specialist Mercedes Workshop in Sydney and a contact no. ?

Emitting blue smoke on a trailing throttle from high revs may not necessarily mean bad news.
I bought a car new. Was in 3rd gear, past a friend observer slowing down from 120 km/hr. Observer noticed the same thing.
The car at the time (1.6 litre Galant) had about 4,000 kilometres on the odo.

Quite a lively little car. SOHC inclined valves, 100 hp (75kW) @ 6000 rpm, 1060 kilogrammes.

Thanks for the recommendation Styria, my experience in the past has been that changing vss on later m110 is almost certainly in vain as the guides will be worn. I would recommend cylinder head removal and the guides replaced.
