Valve spring compressors M100 and M116/7 motors.

Bugged by one solitary noisy lifter on my 6.9 a few months ago I made a spring compressor from plans supplied by "Koan" .



Unfortunately this does not fit the M117 motor as the foot is too big to fit between the cam bearing towers so I have been eyeing the compressor for sale at etoolcart.com but landed in Australia this would come to about AUD$500.

The plans for the M117 one were presented to me a few months ago so today I made one.



It worked perfectly on my "Parts 450" and I would imagine would work just as well on a 6.9 so long as it clears the oil line. I'll try both when I replace the one noisy lifter on my 6.9.

I am sure the adjustability built into the design of this M117 version will allow it to be used on many different M-B OHC engines.

How do you know which is the noisy lifter?

The manual says to get each cylinder to it's own TDC then press each each rocker in turn (I was going to use a hammer handle) and see which one is soft.

They can be tested off car by filling with oil and measuring the force required to compress them.

Would this tool facilitate in replacing my valve stem seals?

It would allow you to remove the cam followers, shims and valve collets but you would still need to support the valves with something (compressed air, electrical cable or string trimmer line) before you removed the valve stem collets - or the obvious would happen.

Have you tried a cupful of ATF in the engine to see if that clears the noisy lifter?

Thanks for the idea which is often mentioned but my engine has 12 litres of Red-line synthetic 20-50 at $136 per 3.5 litres and i would not be happy to pour ATF in it - much happier to find and change the lifter.
