I have in the past 10 or so years seen many discussions on auto forums about motor oil's and having bought a fair bit of the stuff myself over the years I came to find that all oil is NOT created equal but apart from seeing many and various cars serviced or varying mileage and build quality there is no hard data based comparison.
People have their favourites (Mine is Amsoil) and Ive dealt with Fuchs, Penrite, Castrol and Nulon in bulk drums and retail packaged product.
So consider this, The only publicly available benchmark for engine oil is in the Transport industry with fleets fitted with oil analysis systems where extreme load and use dictates that this is a financial necessity in terms of engine wear, oil consumption and fuel economy (Most Semi's use 1 lt of diesel per few km 2-7).
Motor oil is a blended product which means it is not distilled in the form you purchase but mixed up from various chemicals as well as the base oil, additives such as Zinc (ZDDP) and detergents and added in varying quantity.
Mileage of the car is also a factor especially in higher mileages as is the original build quality where obviously MB excel.
Synthetic oils are also not created equal when it comes to cracked polymers and additive or sneaky packaging where you end up with a part mineral oil blend with your synthetic.
Ive found in the past that searching the internet for a particular oil will often give you the information you desire before making your choice.
Cheers,
Tony
