Last week I changed the oil in my diff as it was the last unchanged fluid on my car.
From the moment I dropped the plug my heart sank to it's boots as this opaque pink thick fluid the consistency of watery toothpaste came out.
I refilled it with Penrite Limslip 90 and gingerly took it for a run but nothing untoward happened- no noises and no problems and the impression that the slippery diff was working better than before.
Today while working on my airconditioning with the car on the hoist I spotted a puddle of oil - about a tablespoon - on the floor.
The car sits a little tail down when on my hoist and sometimes leaks are a little more obvious than when sitting on the ground with the tail higher.
The oil is coming from the centre of the right inner constant velocity joint rubber gaiter and I assume the oil seal on that side has failed and there is probably a torn gaiter as well - which I couldn't find. It also hopefully explains the reason for the thick goop that was in there (my guess is redline diff oil with some other agent added to thicken it)
What I don't understand is why the oil appears to be coming from the centre of the C-V joint rather than between the diff housing and the shaft itself - which is totally dry. There was oil spray visible above the joint but nothing on the floor where the car is usually parked.
Any comments gratefully accepted as I was going to re-build the rear arm and subframe bushes anyway and I guess I have just added diff seal(s) to the list.
