I'm thinking my 450SE has a some sludge buildup in the oil system. I'd like to do an oil change, run some stuff thru it to loosen and collect any sludge etc. into a new filter, then change that oil for high quality oil and again a new filter.

Any recommendations on a good oil flushing product?

Some have said to put some ATF in the clean engine oil (about 1 cup of ATF)..

Others suggest a concoction of clean oil and diesel fuel.

Just after something that will work.

Ian.

Hi B13, there are only two things I would contemplate doing. Firstly, remove the rocker covers and high pressure spray all the valve gear with diesel or kerosene, with the sump plug removed.

I would then change engine oil and filter twice, after 10 or 15 minutes running each time. Just use ordinary el-cheapo oil but then, with third oil and filter change, use good quality oil (as in pay extra !) and go with that. That ought to clean things up pretty well. Regards, Styria

The M-100 lot like 1/2 litre of ATF in some cheap oil followed by a short time with Diesel oil in the system for it's extra detergent qualities with new filters at each change.

Given the trouble several of you guys are having with sludge I might stick to my Gold plated Redline oil.

You could cook off the inside of my engine.

Nobody seems to talk about the effect of diesel and detergent has on gaskets all over the engine.

If they are old and just in position, you might have to put some new ones (rocker covers/sump, etc.)

Otherwise, Styria's suggestions seems to be the 'safe' method.

When I flushed my 350 in preparation for a move to synth from mineral I used a very thin semi synth and put it on fast idle for about 20mins using the same but drained filter. I then drained and put the full synth and new filter in.

However, this link provided by benzboy (thanks) sometime ago is a real good read. Just useful info, the flushing oil section is a few paragraphs down including diesel oil. Whatever thinner oil you use there seems to be some risk involved but have a read.

I say flush out your old gaskets and get rid of them - if they are that old they should be dumped along with the garbage.

Since the XA XB and XC Falcons came out (clogged up tappets quicktime) I have used a cupful of ATF fluid to clean out stuck hydraulic tappets, ATF having a very high detergent content. Consequently I would suggest using one or two cupfuls a day before an oil and filter change as a method of cleaning out any motor.
