Diesel Motors want $90 a litre for 6.9 Diff oil and $32 for 250 mls.

They apparently had 2 litre bottles that had been on display for 2 years and someone purchased them last week for $60 each.

This stuff makes red-line oil look like the bargain of the century .

Any suggestion on what to put in the diff for an oil change?

At that price I suggest Laphroaig. It might look a bit odd lying under the diff for a quick tipple though....:p
I am advised that the Mobil synthetic diif oil is good and that the Redline is even better. I suspect that the genuine article is Mobil anyway.

Edit - we used Redline Synthetic in the Getrag gearbox of the Audi S2 - on the advice of Audi and it improved the gearchange significantly (but that was before the death of the S2 at the hands of a box trailer.)

I used Penrite Limslip Gear Oil SAE 85W-40, the wheels haven't fallen off yet so it's doing something.

Hi Koan,

I purchased 2 litres of Penrite Limslip 90 yesterday which is what the Penrite book suggests. If I can tell any difference I will change it again for one of the "Exotics".

The diff in my car is as quiet as any 116/126/124/170 I have ever owned so should be in good condition.

I don't think Penrite had the oil selection tool on the website when I was looking for oil, I 'phoned them and that's what was recommended. From what I can see my choice is thicker (technical term) than yours, probably makes little difference, what do you think?

They had a Penrite catalogue on the shelf and there was a very detailed breakdown of oils and models.

The 450SEL 6.9 was specifically mentioned as Limslip 90.

I am sure 85/140 limslip will be the same oil with some modifiers in it to keep it a little thicker when hot which is probably a good idea in an older diff.
