Took the S350 on a shakedown cruise to Donnybrook and back yesterday - approx 450 km.
Here is a blurry shot taken with my iphone of the S350 dash as we were nearing home last night.

It shows average fuel consumption of 6.2 L/100km. Most of the journey was spent with the cruise control on 113 km/hr although it is at 100km/hr for the last little motorway bit nearing home.

For a car with more performance than a 6.9 the consumption is breathtaking.

I guess new technology will now always better than 'old'. I have not driven the Diesel version of the S350, only the Petrol engine version of the same car. I understand that performance when pushed hard could be impressive with the help of a seven or eight speed box, but unless pushed, acceleration is somewhat leisurely.

In comparison, with the 6.9, torque and not revs are the secret to brisk acceleration. Not once, when driving the new car, did I experience the feeling of torque so characteristic of a 6.9. Maybe I should have driven the S350 a bit further, and a bit harder to get a proper perspective of its qualities. In the meantime, GB will do nicely and she's up to the job of pleasing me....I know, I'm a bit old fashioned. Perhaps a case of head in the sand. Regards Styria

That's just the point Styria Diesel not petrol has more push from idle than 6.9 and all the way. :D

Hi Styria I posted this in other post by Bill .
S350 BlueTec Power 190kW @ 3600rpm Torque 620Nm @ 1600-2400rpm
Power to Weight Ratio 97.2 (W/kg) Acceleration 0-100km/h 6.8 (s)
S500 Power 335kW @ 5500rpm Torque 700Nm @ 1800-3500rpm
Power to Weight Ratio 167.9 (W/kg) Acceleration 0-100km/h 4.8 (s)
Your old 500E Power 285kW @ 6000rpm Torque 530Nm @ 2800-4800rpm
Power to Weight Ratio 155.7 (W/kg) Acceleration 0-100km/h 5.2 (s)
you will not Torque is more than a 6.9 Oh and Euro 6.9 was rated at 7.2 seconds 0-100 kmh so its faster in rolling acceleration.

Next years model will have the new 9 speed automatic - mine has the seven speed 7G-tronic plus.
Never gets higher then 5th around town and only changes into 7th at 110km/hr.

The diesel has torque that feels just like a 6.9 and it is never leisurely unless you feather the throttle and drive quietly. I am surprised how much more gruntier this motor is in this car rather than that in the 320CDI I recently sold.

It's just that it runs out of puff just near the 4,200 red-line so you need all the gears to keep up the momentum of the short power band.

Anyway I have another Mercedes coming in the next two weeks - the ML350 for my new Lady - Kelly - so I will have a home grown comparison.

Hi Geoff, I certainly can't argue with the specs. you are quoting. One needs to look at kilowatts produced by the S500 - a staggering fifty percent higher than the 6.9, so it should come as no surprise that its acceleration improves on the older car by the margin of about two seconds. It is called progress, and I certainly concede that engine and driveline improvements, especially over the last ten years have been nothing short of sensational.

Bill, I am so surprised at your quote regarding the engine characteristics of the Diesel - quite remarkable. I reckon if I was a few years younger, say by twenty, and if I had more money up my sleeve, I would have taken the plunge to have a five speed Auto fitted to Gleaming Beauty - or maybe a 6 speed manual box to do justice to the M100 6.9 engine - it is that good.Regards. Styria

Geoff, Auto or Manual ? Shouldn't you be going for a Seven Speeder to get the most from the torque of the 6.9 engine ? Regards. Styria
