fuel tank

i first want to say hello, i'm new to site and looking forward to getting to know you all. i have a question, i have a 1979 450 sel 6.9, my question is, i'm cleaning my fuel tank and noticed a small plastic tank inside my fuel tank, it has a broken piece at the top , what is this tnk? and is it neccessary? thanks for you reply in advance

Sounds like an expansion tank or possibly part of a fuel return or vapour system but considering the US pollution laws are what they are someone else may have a better answer.

As for it being broken? Being inside the tank I cant see an issue unless it allows raw fuel into a vapour recovery or scavenging system, something you probably wouldnt notice unless you have had the Tank full (96 litres).

Welcome to TK and particularly to another 6.9 owner!!! Many MBs have reserve tanks but I never really understood the concept.... And I've never seen a reserve tank.

Is it bigger than the openings?? If it's cylindrical in shape it could be a plastic cover for the fuel sender, although all the ones I've seen have been aluminum.

it is a small round tank, and the sender does screw down into it, i have a guy who wants to cut it open and bead blast and line it with a product call red kote, he said he would build a small tank out of metal, but i its not needed then i can save a few dollars, hes charging me 450.00 us dollars.
