Found the site that describes the vacumm pipes on the 280 110 engines.
To Quote.... The plastic pipe from the nipple on the valve cover vent hose is to supply a low vacumm draw to the "Fuel Pressure Damper" in order to prevent the possibility any vapour from escaping to the atmosphere. Purely a precaution by Mercedes as it probably does not exist on any other K Jetronic System fitted by other vehicle manufacturers ? ? It does not effect any engine function.
Now I can go away and die happy ! Thanks to all for their interest....Sean

Sounds to me a bit like the fume scavenger canister that lives in the boot of my 450SE. In Australia, at least, and probably in most other countries. ADR27A madated a system for reticulating vapours. Most cars have had a charcoal-filled canister since the mid 1970s to do the job.

Yes Brain ,I think you are right. As this is a UK Spec car I guess that is why I have found numerious differences. I think that this Pressure Damper was fitted from the 1981 models on. Mine is late 1980 i.e., a '81 model car.
To follow Mark's suggestion about sharing information.....

280 S L 107s are all very slow to take the last 10 or so litres into the tank . The 280 107 SLs don't give a wooshing noise when the filler cap is removed. Something to do with the small aux. tank mounted above the main tank and the vent tube hanging down at the rear axle.. (.I think ) Set the ign timing Vacumm disconnected , at 36% BTDC mechanical advance at approx. 3600- 3800 RPM. Ignore the 2 % ATDC on the sticker. If the 3-4 light throttle up shift flares , common , increase the modulator pressure ,as necessary, and set the shift points higher, as necessary. With the smaller engine ,which likes to be reved ,you will have a nice responsive part throttle down shifts whilst still retaining light throttle early upshifts.

P.S . I like this 280 engine, which runs like a turbine............ Sean
