Diesel V Petrol no contest

Diesels .... my daughter boasts about the Economy of her Hyundai I 40 Wagon
some 40 mph Motorway and light traffic. Well I have news for her...on the trip down to see her, in Shell Cove, my Turbo Golf returned 60.5 MPH on Petrol.
Driving in the 100/110 range in 6th Gear.... 2400/2500 Rpm. Still I won't say anything, as she is very happy with her Wagon.. no need to rub it in.

It will be interesting to see the long term future (if at all) if Diesel engines after the scandals of the emissions cheating. One wonders if their future outlook is bleak, especially in cars and light trucks.

Diesels are under scrutiny in the EU for their particulate emissions, quite separately from the scandal of the emission software issue, and I don't believe they will survive that scrutiny. Combine this scrutiny with the huge leap forward in economy for the petrol engine and I think we may see diesels limited to heavy haulage.
I also have a wry smile at the UK Govt.'s decision that all new cars must be electric in a few years; I smile because they have not yet worked out how to meet the demand to recharge batteries on such a large scale. One critic predicted they would need another 20 nuclear power stations just to meet demand.
Having said all that, my PII gets about 10 mpg and the Spirit about 14 mpg - so that puts me completely out of the race.

My eldest son Albert decided to purchase a Camry hybrid on account of low fuel consumption.
We seem to manage a better consumption around town then on highway speeds due to the electrical regeneration as you decelerate and brake lightly.
We manage to get 5.5itres/100kms which is around 51miles per gallon (imperial).

My CLK430 uses around 18litres/100kms around town while cruising at 100km/h this drops dramatically by half (31miles per gallon).

Yes that's about right hybrid system will turn engine off upto 80 if running on flat ground. If over this speed engine does not turn off unless coasting down hill. Around town almost half what a normal Camry uses. Highway its about only 1 litre better. 4.9 highway 5.2 combined and 5.7 around town. These are official claims and in 260000 km in last 2 year's find real world is 10 to 15% more.
