Neh, that looks like a blanking plate where the SLS pump goes....

Just as well... remember you loved the hydro setup on the bismark? Its not unlike that... better to be without it.

I meant that tank "thing" on the front of the radiator, isn't that the same as the 6.9?

yes still have stains on my carpet from the Bismark bleeding everywhere.

Hi Des,

Well yes it does the same thing on both the 6.9 and the 280S... it receives and dries the freon in the a/c system... but its not part of the suspension.

Cheers,

Ian.

Yes - forgot that wear sensors were only fitted after 1976 or so and the light is on the right side of the blank bit in the middle.

So it is either
1) Low brake fluid
2) Sticking handbrake release (not uncommon and quickly stuffs the shoes)
3) Faulty brake fluid connection or switch
4) Faulty or shorting switch or wiring to the handbrake release
5) Retro-fitted brake pad sensors with low pads.

Thanks Bill, I'll check these and report back.

I did notice the hand brake makes a rip sound, like in a normal car when you rip up on the handbrake without using the button to engage it correctly.

Kind Regards
Des

I usually turn the handbrake handle as I pull it, or push the button in on other cars so putting the handbrake on is silent. It's an old pedantic habit I learnt from a driving instructor years ago that said it stopped wear on the ratchet:rolleyes: Just a bit of trivia.

Now, a nit-pic, you know me, it's like a Where's Wally.:D What about the bonnet star, has anyone else noticed it yet. What's it from?

Nup, that's even newer than 126's yeah?? got the little ball thing at the base of the star... i'm probably wrong.. but i can be certain it's not off a 116.

It looks like it's off a later car, maybe W124 or newer, but fitted to the original base.

ummm?? is it not from a W116?

Not that it matters Des. Like I said, I love to play spot the difference. ;) But at least you've got one there. My 350 was without a star for a few months before I sourced one. They look so naked without one.

So yeah, I don't know what it's from, it's just not a typical w116 one. I thought the flat base might be right too like Martin says even if siliconed or glued on. It needs the correct star and retaining spring and clip to hold it on. But the star's base is completely different like Cam said.

yep was out of brake fluid, the reservoir was nearly empty, filled it up, problem fixed.

Took the radiator cap off, all fell to bits, new cap on, she is fine.

That's good news.

The only other thing now is to keep an eye out for the leak. There's simply no other way for brake fluid to disappear over time unless there's a leak. It'll most likely be either a hose or calliper.

ok yep, thanks, was thinking there had to be a leak somewhere.

I must say, these M110 engines really do sound sweet when you give them the boot, probably more so than the CE, normally I don't care much for non V8 sounds but that BURRRRRRRR of the M110 is really great.

The power is really quite reasonable for such a big car.

Is it Thistle Green or Caledonian Green? Either way, congrats Des, it looks like a bargain buy, I'm impressed. You are planning on selling the CE now? or keeping the 2 of them?

Probably the second best W116 colour, apart from classic white.

Unsure yet what I am going to do with the cars yet, have just ordered a stack more new parts for the CE so will probably keep that, see how the 280S holds up,

just been out for a bash around the streets, notice a few things,

temp seems to be around 40-60, assume that is a stuck open thermostat, wouldn't really call that an issue as it is better to be stuck open than stuck closed.

when you give it full throttle there is a slight trail of blue smoke behind the car, so must be rings or something like that, not really an issue for now, motor seems strong and pulls well.

not bad really.

The smoke could just be valve stem seals, compared to rings isnt a big issue.
