Hi All.
I think I'm in need of a diff for my 1974 350SLC. I'm finding it hard to locate a good supply of W107 stuff in Melbourne but I've found a few diffs from different models at pick-a-part.

How would I check the diff ratios? Are they stamped on the side of the housing?

Which models are interchangeable with the W107?

I know of only one way to check the diff - place one wheel on the ground and check the play in the opposite wheel. Anyone got other ideas?

Many thanks in advance.
Steve.

Hi mate, I run a 350SL diff in my 450SE track car. Basically any V8 diff from a W116 will fit in a W107 and vice-versa. The 6-cyl diff is a bit smaller and not really suited to the V8, though it might fit.

Good news for you! I have the perfect condition old diff from my 450SE sitting here doing nothing, you can have it for $100 and pickup is from the western suburbs of Melbourne. Best thing is its already removed from the car.

PM me if interested.

I.

Actually scratch that. You'll need a 3.46:1 diff from a 350SE, SL or SLC, not a 3.07:1 diff from a 450SE/SEL/SL/SLC. Its stamped on the outside as the first 3 numbers of the serial number (if memory serves).

The difference in installing a 450 diff in a 350SL will be slightly lower acceleration, slightly higher top speed, slightly better petrol economy, and you will need to change your speedo to one from a 450 so the speed measurement is accurate.

Hey, thanks for the information. Also, thanks for the offer. I might have a bit of a think about the ratio change because there is still more than enought power there to accelerate the vehicle. And it's light (compared to my 300SEL 3.5!). I also have a speedo already from the 450SE so it might just all work out.

I'll pm you.

Cheers.
Steve.
