Very sad, badly neglected, one would have to be dead keen (give me one reason) to want to take it on. You'd be lucky to find one in worse condition. Take her away. :( Well....Regards Styria

What's up with the vinyl roof that was on it? Why would someone ruin this car by putting that crap on there. Or is it a factory option. I vaguely remember ever seeing a Mercedes with a vinyl top. I am happy mine does not have one. Every car I have had with a vinyl top has had issues with it eventually. Besides, I think it kinda makes any car look like a pimp-mobile.

Hey DUDE ,
Looks like that the car was in the middle of street war and shooting . it will need a lot of work to sweep the memories .

Vinyl roofs is a fad of the 1970s originating in the USA when car companies tried to emulate a convertible roof 'look'.
Some were half vinyl roofs and were called 'Landau' - again going back to the early age of motoring (1920s) when convertible roofs had external bows.

Yeah, we used to have a Monte Carlo that actually had a placard & emblem attached to the side of it that said Landau. Half-white vinyl top on a fire-engine red Monte Carlo. I have had a couple other cars that had full tops done. Eventually, the wind would get in under it by the front windshield and then you have a lovely parachute-looking roof while going down the freeway. (LOL, you never knew it did that, for when you got out of the car, the top would look normal). I just happened to notice it one day when I had a friend pick-it up for me and was following them back to my house that I noticed it did it.

Not so much on newer cars of today, but it wasn't that long ago that Lincoln had these felt-looking landau and full tops on them. 95% of them were black, and although they looked fabulous when they first came-out.......a few years down the road they look faded and kind of ratty. They might as well have stuck that damned woodgrain contact paper decal crap down the sides.

I hate that extra crap on a car. Just paint the damned thing a solid color and leave it alone.

Hi Dude, we'll just have to lassoo you off that pony - before it disappears down that mountain gully near Spokane...well, close by....:D

Anyway, as our Michel says, fad of the '70s. Mind you, if it was fitted correctly, and on the P6 Rovers (1972-1976) it was, it could in fact be quite attractive. I used to have a sliding Webasto Sunroof on a Rover 3500S. It was a lovely option, and it did kind of give you open air motoring. The roof had a far bigger opening that the steels on the 116. Incidentally, the steel roofs on the 116s did in fact originate from Great Britain - made by, who else, but Webasto. Regards Styria

Well, it's not cheap. Advertised at $2900.00. No Air Cells, so five of those needed to replace the wooden blocks holding it up now. Never mind what the rest of the hydraulics are like, considering the car hasn't turned a wheel for about two years. The interior is shot, a bit similar to the one that 'our Dude' has found in another section of the forum, there is rust in the rear wheel wells and the general appearance of the car is not that far removed from the 'Dude' car mentioned.

So whoever would part with their hard currency, would have to find a bit more of the folding stuff...and yes, it doesn't have a sunroof, an item that just about everybody wants. Regards Styria

Well, it just goes to confirm that I have been ignorant of this fact for the last thirty years. Everyone, please accept my apologies. In fact, I didn't realize until about three years ago that Webasto built the steel sliding roof for the 116. I discovered this when I looked at the alloy strip that fits to the header panel at the front of the sunroof. Regards Styria

I've seen early 60's cars with Webasto sunroofs (or is it rooves). Similar design to the W116
