Can anyone tell me how much the W116 engines (280,350,450,6.9) weigh?



If you suspect I am in the process of conjuring up my next feat of mechnical bastardry... you would be correct. :rolleyes:

Hi Cameron, I don't know if anyone would be able to tell you. I have both a 450 and 6.9 engine at my premises, but have no means to weigh them. The 6.9 is a huge lump of cast iron, and I am only guessing that you'd be looking at 400 kgs. for a complete engine. The 450 would weigh about 80 kgs. less - but, it's all guesswork. You must let me in on any secrets that you may be harbouring.:cool:Regards, Styria

Hi Michel, those are interesting figures, I was surprised at the relatively small difference between cast iron and alloy V8's. By the look of things, my "here's looking at you kid" estimates appear to be somewhat exaggerated.

Interesting reference to the flat V12. I wonder if that engine was fitted to the E-Classes that were raced in the German Touring Car championships ? I also see a reference to three valved engines - in the very early '90's (I think), Mercedes in one of their brochures made geat play of the fact that there was no need for 4-valve heads as they lacked torque and 3's were perfectly adequate. Today's engineering seems to indicate otherwise. So, what would a 6.9 weigh - all up, it would have to be close to 330 kgs. with all ancillaries fitted. Regards, Styria
