As found on the net a (supposedly) good running 6.9 M100 engine

http://www.allclassifieds.com.au/ac/ac0032?vcid=122247466

Hi Michel, not particularly brilliant value. By the time you purchase parts, such as head gaskets, valve guides and valve stem seals (the last two are NOT part of an overhaul gasket kit, cost of Engineering workshop and sundry fuel injection items, you'd really be looking down the barrel. IMO. Regards Styria

But what price do you put on such a motor if you want one? They are not exactly common....

I suspect, BenzBoy, if an owner blew up his engine, there is every chance that the whole car would just go to the crusher. Sure, there'd be some exceptions, but overall...?

I did sell a Silver Green 6.9 a couple of years ago that had been fitted with a low mileage second hand replacement engine that cost $3k. to buy, and another $1750.00 to install. A very poor job it was too. In addition, No.4 cylinder was down on compression which required removal and servicing of the heads. That car has since gone to Queesland, but I have no knowledge of its whereabouts. Regards Styria

Sending a car to the wreckers on account of an expensive engine rebuild or replacement might be a thought now, but my feelings are that in a few years 6.9s are going to be very sought after.

Hi Michel, I think you're absolutely spot-on. In fact, it has gotten to the stage where good 6.9s are now automatically attracting higher asking prices. I realize that what is being asked is not always what one gets, but the trend is becoming evident.

It should also be remembered that, according to SEL69L, about eight years ago there were only about thirty five 6.9s road registered in NSW. It would be handy if there was some way one could get an up to date figure for 2008/9/10. Might make interesting reading. Regards Styria

One should make contact with Nathan (in WA), the keeper of records on 6.9s and ask the question

I believe this is the same stable that the 690SE came from, and the seller knows his MBs. Am told there has also already been a fair price drop - it's been on AC for a while now.

Correct-o-mundo.. :)

I've got dibs on this, unless someone else wants to offer him more?!

Going to re-build it then add the turbo's.

Should hopefully be picking it up in the next couple weeks.

If one was to go to the trouble of rebuilding the engine, for the purposes of establish an existing vehicle as a long term driver or concours vehicle so well and good.

To bolt on turbos (in the quest for power), well in my opinion, it would be better to buy a newer second hand V8 (from Benz or another manufacturer). That way you'd get power and economy AND reliability!

Nathan did contact me and advised me that (according to his figures) there were around 48 6.9s in NSW (not necessarily registered, but on the road and not wrecked) while the total figure for Australia was 195. (thanks Nathan)

Sold! :)

Picked up all the top end yesterday.

Heads to be ported (just a little bit), shaved, freshened.
Cams to be 'livened' up.
New valve guides, springs, stem seals etc..

Get it all ready to whack the computer and coil packs on in the coming months.

After that i'll evaluate whether it needs any forced induction....which will probably be a yes.

The bottom end will be re-built long-term. New custom forged pistons / rings etc etc..

BAR, i can't believe you'd question the reliability from a 6.9 engine?
The only un-reliable thing on these engines / cars is the suspension, which i have the luxury of not having.
With each engine being a cast iron block and run under full load for hours before being release from the factory, I think they've got the goods for an increase.

Nice work Cam!

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with this engine, by the sound of things.

Cam, do yourself a favour and join the M-100 group before you go to far.
The members there have done all this before and know what works, what doesn't and what will ruin the engine.
PM me for details
