Very impressive piece of Engineering.......
But there is always a but..... A needle Row bearing fails and the bits go through the multiple Planetary sets all the Fuel savings in the world would not pay the repair bill. What is the design life of this Transmission ?

There has to be a diminishing return for each gear added.

e.g. the difference between a 2 speed and a 3 speed is immense, between 3-4 is huge, 4-5 big, etc etc.

10 is probably getting excessive (more moving parts = higher cost & more to wear out), but the transmission is becoming more & more important as the years go by. I think the engine is no longer the central hub of a motor vehicle and the trans has taken over the role. The right trans with the appropriate ratios can transform a vehicle regardless of power output.
