Currently used for Military vehicles but the airless tyre will be available in 2014 to the Public.

Dunlop had something like this years ago and I can't see how it can work on a road car. Get mud or rocks in it and it'd completely throw out the wheel balance. So then you need sidewalls, with the potential of air pressure inside; which kinda defeats the purpose.

And like most run-flats they're far more expensive, heavier and hard to get

It's a very old idea that has been around for many, many years going back to the 1920s. As yet, no-one has solved the problems that Oversize lists.
By the way, what do you do if you clip the sidewall of you runflats on a gutter? You call the tow-truck. Yeah right. Runflats are for the birds.

Yes, I have heard of the run flats being criticized - don't know who by, nor can I remember for what reason. Also, I am not all that enamored by carrying a tube of whatever in place of a proper spare in the event of a puncture, blow-out (?) or whatever. Even the little Honda Jazz has a get you home spare in a separate compartment. Regards Styria

Drive it with the temp use spare fitted and you'll know why a full size road wheel is far superior.... But unfortunately many cars don't have the room for one. Which creates the problem of what to do with the flat tyre when your boot's packed for the family holiday. Better to have a can of sealer and a small compressor. Or RACV Total Care!
