We have often discussed the useability or longevity of oldish tyres that have been stored. Like for instance, I purchased some tyres from Afro 107, all in good condition and still fitted to their rims, and I maintain and hope that, if properly stored in accordance with recommendations in this article, I should be able to use them within the next two years. Any further opinions ? Regards Styria

:)When I bought my SL about 5 years ago I and had one very bad one that felt like I had a square wheel , I was advise that as the others were between 6 and 10 years old to replace the lot , which I did. As I was planning a couple of interstate trips I figured I could live without a high speed blow out.!
Four Michelin "Energy" later, the ride is quiet and very smooth. Plus safe in the wet. There is more to tires than the ageing process.

There's no legal age limit on tyres in Victoria. Each tyre manufacturer has their own recommendations. 5 years is about the limit. I would find the newest tyres available since they do go off like race tyres. From my experience radial tyres don't last anywhere near as long as the old cross plies. Just like fuel....

I'm just curious. Think of the number of people who drive around with a 20 year old spare tyre.

..... which is a much sought after feature. How many times have you read glowing reports service wise, with the notation...and the original unused spare in the boot ! Regards Styria

Until you need to use it on a trip back from Melbourne and you realise (after it blows up) that it was too old :eek:

In Victoria you don't need a spare for a RWC. If you have one it doesn't even have to be in good condition, but it must be secured if mounted externally or in the cabin area of a wagon.

Tyres of today are hit and miss with quality and handling characteristics. The most annoying things are that tyres that grip don't last, good looking or expensive tyres aren't always good and the size that you need is becoming harder to find....
