Hey, I get to start a thread in the 'motorsports' section!

Yesterday I went out to Zwartkops to support GrantV, and to further my son's development.

That looks like a f*kn great day out!!

Those 2 racers above, are they 123's??? They look like some nice extractors on the m110 engine. Don't suppose you could bring another set out to australia when you head out here?? I'm sure Oscar would love some for his Team 116 car! :D

How did the day go? What were the times like?? and what was Grant and your son up against?

I'm sure Grant will tell more about his racing. I thought it was good - hw was only beaten by the large cubic displacement yank stuff.

As to my son - well he's the 2-year-old lightie who's head is in the one picture - so he didn't race - yet.

See what else is interesting about those 280E's - apparently the power steering has been disabled.

Nice pics, Ryan and thanks for coming out to support me. I hope that this is one of those moments that burns itself on your boy's memory and that he goes on to become an ace petrolhead.

Those two cars are indeed W123'S - one 280 and the other a 280E. They belong to a father and son team who had previously campaigned a Renault R8 in the Pre '77 Historic Car Series, but they spent more time fixing the damn thing. They told me that seeing my Finny race was the catalyst to them deciding to race a Mercedes and they were astounded at what a cheap and easy way it was to go racing. More than that, both cars are extremely reliable, even though the one car has well over 300 000km on the clock. It's a new experience for them to race, park the car, and then dust it off for the next event.

Wish you guys were here, because the sound that these cars make is pure music!

It is only their 3rd time out and already the cars are doing very quick times, so after a few months developement they should really be flying.

I race in a different series for pre '66 saloons - you can see the Finny about five cars behind the Biscayne and Studebaker in the third pic. The second pic is of Ryan's boy, Ethan, taking in all the important stuff. He should be encouraged - maybe he'll go on to be the next Lewis Hamilton. Can you imagine how may pristine 6.9's and 300SE Finny's he could buy his old man with his endorsement cheque alone?!!!

Good photos Grant, and a great result from the finny. I didn't realise it was only a few meeting old... somehow from the old web site I got the impression that it had been years in development...

Those W123s look great, I think they'd be the choice for 1970s MB to use, did you happen to get any pictures of the induction side of the engine? In standard form the 280 features a 4 barrel carb and the 280E get K-jet FI... would be keen to see what they've done with that...

Cool choice of numbers, 280 and 281 - Povo, Oscar's track car, I think is going to get the race number 280 last time we were talking about it...

Maaate I was excited to see the M110's doing their thing. Speaking of sound Grant or Ryan, did either of you guys happen to take some video so we can hear them? And how uber cool does silver and a black bonnet look?
Extractors noted:cool::cool:

The cars look spectacular.

Actually, I just went searching "Zwartkops" for any new vids but found your old ones Grant. Hope you don't mind me posting a couple. Awsome!! I want a tripple side draft setup:cool:

B13, its the 280's that have only done 3 races. Grant's finny has done many more.

One of the 280's still has standard K-jet. The other was a 280 (not 280E) originally, and now has a holley.

Oscar, it may further interest you that the only mods those M110's have had are the extractors, and, on the one, fitment of the Holley. They claim the extractors gave 11hp.

All hail the Holley 4-barrel!

I had lots of success using one on a 13B rotary race engine while everyone else was using Webers. Same HP and 1/2 the cost...

Are the extractors custom made or an off the shelf item from a supplier?

thanks

Kind Regards

Extractors were custom made by a local exhaust specialist. Apparently the cost was around $280. Nice.

That's very reasonable....provided they were tuned correctly.

I don't really know much about exhausts but from what I have heard they need to be tuned or shaped otherwise they can actually decrease power.

Great stuff again guys... Ryan, being your sons 2 yrs old, i'm guessing your busy preparing his first go-kart for racing in the next couple years?? :D

A mate here in canberra has had his son in a go-kart from age 6 and now he's 11 he's taking kids in their late teens and absolutely thrashing them.. gotta start early. ;)

For the cost of those extractors, how much is postage to Australia for such an item?? Couple hundred bucks? If so, might be worth chasing a set down Oscar!

Great to see y'all getting amongst it... love it!

Well, my son has a pedal car at the moment. But I'm intending to motorise it :D

When he's 15, I want to do a dad-and-son project of building him a racing car- probably it will be in one of those (then) old W203's or W204's - you know something to spend weekends doing to keep him off the streets.

I'd hate to think what those extractors would cost to ship. I reckon between $150-200 too. So for that sum, if I get extractors one day I'll be chasing up friends of friends that know people:rolleyes: True, some guys below Syd in Wollongong that will be able to fix something up cheaper than what local pros will charge. For the moment, the exhaust sounds good and whilst the solex is working I'll leave them alone until they break. But 11hp gain for the extractors which are good value, it's worth investigating down the track, I mean future.

Also, since both intake and extractors may cause decreases in power if not tuned or manufactured correctly I'm gong to stick with stock for sometime I think.

Presuming you're in Oz land by that time, Cams allows junior drivers to start at 14, hence whitey, the 450SE, is a father-son race car project between me and my son (he's 12).
