I never wanted a W108 until now: eBay 280SE 3.5 Sydney, Au

Unfortunately I can't buy it - no space, no spare money and value my goolies and marital status too much but this just seems like the coolest standard 280SE 3.5 around... sure she ain't got the balls of the 6.9 but as far as packing everything together into what could best be described as a mini-MB600 this is it:

I particularly like:

Brown duco with matching hub caps and wide-ish whitewall tyres
Cream / white interior and matching steering wheel
column auto!!
still has "280SE" radio blanking plate and no radio - who needs one when you can listen to lovely V8 music all day..
American headlights

the only things which would be nice would be power windows...

seller makes no mention of milage or a/c - is it a povo pack 3.5?

I saw this one too and drooled a little. I've seen a few 3.5L come up for sale that have had many more features than my 350 but when I think about it now, they were all W109's, ie 300sel 3.5's. Just like a 6.3 except that little difference in engine size.

W108's are such nice looking cars, they have that timeless Mercedes styling that can be traced back to the 1930's, if you sit say a 170 next to a W108 you can see the family heritiage, the link with the past.

Well, it's certainly difficult not to appreciate the beauty and quality of this car-judging by the photos anyway. A lot depends on the interior and the mechanical condition of the engine. The white steering wheel is much sought after and if in really good condition, fetch a small fortune.

The quality and condition of timber is also important. I have seen very few 108/109's where the timber items have been properly refurbished and there is a good reason for that. The dash part of the timber which houses the instruments and the various controls is extremely difficult and time consuming to remove so, more often than not, owners resort to refurbish them in situ, and it simply does not work - you cannot get the finish as far as shine etc. are concerned.

Regarding removal, one just about has to pull the car to pieces - heater controls, instrument panel, air con. console, Radio etc. - you name it, the job is huge.

For some years now, 280SE 3.5's have always commanded top prices, usually $8k. minimum - much higher that our W116 range, including 6.9's. It will be interesting to see how much it will fetch in the end. Regards, Styria
