Wanted to buy;
Pre 1919 vehicle. Can be 1 or 2 cylinders, electric or steam.
Stop laughing please; I am dead serious.
Condition is not important so long as the vehicle is complete.
Yes, I know this is a 107-116 site but each of us has hidden secrets and now you know another one of mine. :p
Regards,
Benz-Boy

You're on!! I stupidly passed on a couple at the time I bought the Phantom. One was a De Dion that was complete and quite cheap - but mostly in boxes. Oh how we regret not doing things...

A De Dion would fit right in, am I correct that a De Dion was the first car owned by Royce and followed his prototype on its test run in case it broke down, which it failed to do?

De Dion was probably one of the top sellers in the veteran era, and still plenty survive. For really early cars to be useable I have seen many De Dions as well as 'Curved Dash' Oldsmobiles still going.
Of course I am biased but for anyone interested in oldies, the Model T Ford was the big leap forward and wiped out the the others with it's strength and reliability.
Many today ignore them as maybe too common, but why are they common?
Because they were simple, tough, reliable, versatile enough to go anywhere, and many are still doing just that.
This VCC rally is for one or two cylinder models only, no Ts, no Rolls Royces, so maybe let them do their thing and we arrange to follow in our own rally, your Phantom, my T, and maybe some others will come along?
T.E.Lawrence swore by his R-R in the desert, and certainly the Ts could go anywhere others could not, any takers?

It's a deal. Sydney to Darwin or bust. OK? :D:D:D:D
However, I have to tell you are wrong about The Rolls-Royce. The first SHR car was a twin cylinder Royce and then the first 10HP built in 1904 as a Rolls-Royce had twin cylinders and 1800cc displacement. 16 were sold between 1904 and 1906.

Ok smarty-pants, but what chance you get one of those for the rally?
A Phantom and a T would be a breeze, and at least if we need a few weeks off, I can start planning from now.
Yep, sounds good.

What chance has a snowflake in hell?
Yeah - I'm up for a long rally but not until the end of 2009. For 2009 I have to work ...

Well how about we do our own rally following them in 2012?
Gives us time to prepare - the T is running fine but has no bodywork - and time to rustle up a few post '19 vintages to follow on.

I have already enlisted for the 2012 Rally, even without a vehicle. I will find one.
However, there is nothing wrong with an eclectic group doing a rally in 2010 or 2011 - Ant could bring the 6.3. I know a few Minerva owners who would come; a few WO Bentley chappies and we could round up a few odds and sods to make it a real event. There must be Model T, Austin and others who would like to join?
Maybe even Sir Des in his new MunichWagen? :D
I say let's do it!!

Benz-Boy

Hmmm. I agree really early cars are fascinating. In regard to the model T, my problem with it, and perhaps Benzboy's as well, is not its surviving numbers, but the fat that it was such a leap forward in the state of the art. Its too modern I guess, and too different from the really early 1 and 2 cylinder cars.

However, how about a very Benz?

I have no idea what sort of money these really early cars sell for.

An early Benz is so rare that one would be a museum piece and totally beyond the grasp of even the seriously wealthy. There is a variety of veterans around but getting a complete one is very difficult. A mechanically restored veteran sells for anywhere between $30,000 and $60,000 for garden varieties and the same for just a chassis of a more desirable one - and then you go and find an engine for it...
Have a look at the following B and G results - for example lots 34 onwards.
