having now driven a Australian 6.9 and an import, you can feel the difference in urgency for sure.

On the topic of the 2.65 ratio, I prefer this on my 560SEC vs the 2.47 on my SEL.

To add to this post (and aplogies 5 years later) but thank you for highlighting this. I was going to swap my leaking 6.9 steering box out for the 450’s box and now I read it’s been modified for these 6.9 vehicles.

one piece of advice that would he handy to have confirmed by you guys, the exhaust system from the transmission back…. Is it the same as the 450??

it looks relatively similar underneath both. The reason j ask is that the 6.9’s exhaust is rusted and shot and the 450 has a relatively new exhaust (still probably 20+ years) but looks in great shape and no rust.

Wanting to interchange this eventually also if it is compatible.

I can comment on the differences in steering box/steering pump specs as they relate to the various 116 models. The internal valving on the 6.9 steering box unit has been altered to account and compensate for the extra weight of the 6.9 mechanical assembly. In addition, the 6.9 steering pump has maximum pressure of 90 atms, as compared to 82 atms (fairly certain) for the lesser models.

Whatsmore, for the 6.9 range, there are two models of Steering Pumps. One is the more common Sperry Vickers unit, whilst the other is a ZF unit with a larger output shaft seal and probably a larger bearing for that shaft. We have just recently investigated the various changes pertaining to the box and pump and the differences are noted herein. Regards Styria
