on a fine Saturday in May 2004 I drove past one of the less salubrious pre-owned motor re-allocation consultants and staring out of the heavily used cheap specials was a green 116.

I took it for a drive - decided that the lack of power, directional control and retardation along with non working A-C and a constantly heating heater was as good a reason as ever to buy a car with no known history that didn't want to idle anyway.

My real reason for buying it was that I wanted a mule to practice my first attempt at a 117 timing chain change at a time where there was no network of internet co-conspirators, limited technical information and most parts were purchased from either the local M-B agent or M-B Spares.

Later in the year I discovered the W116 site on Yahoo.com and met Nathan - a lot of water has gone under the bridge in the past 8 years.

After a busy year in the shed the car became a paragon of good behaviour and was quite a joy to drive, stop and throw around. I also had the a-c system re-built for the summer heat and found out that it was UK delivered from May 1979 production and imported into Australia in the 1980's.

You will note that it came fitted with chrome wheel arch trims and removal of the first showed this rot.

And this

RustinRear.jpg

These were a couple of areas that had suffered previous accident damage but other than this and the driver's door there was very little significant rust so I started with some other preloved rust free panels and a milan brown driver's door and Migged and Oxied my way into winter 2005.

I then had to teach myself to paint so later in the year the car had five coats of lesonal and guide coat of thin black.

It was then largely sanded down and parked in the shed while first a Porsche and them my 6.9 took my attention.

It has now come to the fore with my daughter's new fella and tomorrow the colour coat will be applied.

Here are some photos from today after application of the StoneKote to the nether regions and wheel wells.

A quick coat of colour was applied to the rear to see the colour which looked surprisingly green compared to the original colour but does actually match the original more than what was on the car.

Unfortunately my compressor was found to be wanting so a new one was purchased this afternoon

And here is the culprit with the smallest piece of a car ever to be seen on my hoist

I am looking forward to tomorrow

Brother Bill,

These are exciting times indeed.

A car that you've spent a fair bit of time repairing and fixing is suddenly given a 'new lease of life'.

Well done and keep those great pics coming!;)

That's a good example of why chrome wheel arch moulds can be nasty!!!! Very impressed you managed to fix her (largely) by yourself; well done!! :) Looking forward to more progress reports and pics....

Bill you are a man of many talents and fine tastes and laughing my way through your excellent posts have made my Arvo, and for that I thank you.

Silver Green seems to suit this shape well!

I reckon this new son inlaw prospect deserves a "hang around" patch.

Tony

Michel - no booth, just a shed but there is surprisingly minimal impurities and we are using Acrylic lacquer which is almost dry as soon as it hits the surface.

There is also no wind around at the moment either.

Motec - thankyou for the heads up.

I have two AMG spoilers. One fibreglass and one genuine but this car will be a bogstandard 450SEL when it is finished.

Although it was unloved when I bought it it was also untouched so it is very easy to fix.

Looks good, and I second the comment about well done for it mostly being DIY.

What are the two round protrusions on your vacuum reservoir (in the boot)?

I also need a bigger compressor - my little one can't keep up with the sand blast cabinet.

Sand blasting cabinets need quite a considerable amount of air so choose wisely.

The two protruberances appear to be buffers that the trim panel rests on and are probably to minimise noise transmission into the cabin.

Nice work so far Bill, Just a suggestion but id moisten the floor a tad to make sure the air wash from the spraygun doesn't blow dust up off the floor.

No matter how clean you make it unsealed concrete floors make dust.

I used to hose the floors but an 8 lt garden sprayer with water and a bit of detergent does the trick too.

Just wet it down and roll the car over the wet spot.................

LOL No sense of adventure Michel!

BTW have they stopped mucking about with spray booth EPA crap yet?

I bought one a few years ago with a heater and couldn't put it up because it wasn't enviro friendly.

I'm a fan of moist floors as well but I was warned against it as the excess moisture gets into the paint and causes problems.

Anyway there is a major lack of impurities in the paint and I have seen an iphone picture of the finished product after four coats of clear today amd dust is not an issue.

I will look carefully tonight.
