450SEL Air cond

Very topical I would imagine, what with Melbourne getting 40 + for the next few days...( better than the poor crow eaters though !! )

Yesterday my air cond was working fine, pressures O.K., but after about an hour on the road, the fan seemed to stop ( felt like it any way !! ) & the cool air goes down to zilch.

Working O.K. again this morning on a short trip.

Is there a thermostat or something that comes into play after a while by changing the fan speed or something ?

Listening to the radio, a commentator was saying that the air conditionning on trains in Melbourne stop working past 32C.....

Maybe your Benz is the same?

Sounds like your system is low on refrigerant.

It will do that when the pressure drops due to insufficient refrigerant and pick up again for a while when cold the next day.

If you have the original F12 in the system it will be an expensive exercise.

Probably needs a regas, and yes R12 is no longer available, but converting to R134a need not be such a big deal.
I had it done a year or two back on my 280E, and there was a charge for a new receiver-drier, the new connectors for gassing and a couple of seals, which with the gas too came to $180.
It is still the coldest of all my cars as I used it again today for the commute.
Unfortunately Frank is no longer at Kiama Auto Electrics, or I would be sending more business his way.

I had the new system fitted about 4 years ago & now have a recond compressor ready to go in,..there are oil leaks in the present one,..so I will get the changeover done ASAP.
