I have a 1981, 4 speed auto and I am confused about the change pattern.
What is Mercedes-benz specified change pattern?

It goes from first to fourth (passing by second and third)

perhaps when in drive it starts in 2nd and only uses 1st when low is selected

From my reading of your question, both Michel's and Hoddo's responses answer it -- unless you meant something else. Perhaps you could re-frame your question to clear up any ambiguity.

My own answer to the question as posed would be:
In "4" or "D" at normal throttle -- 2, 3, 4 (unless tuned to always start in 1)
In "4" or "D" at full throttle -- 1, 2, 3, 4
In "2" or "L" at any throttle -- 1, 2, 3, 4.

Down-changes would be the reverse, with first coming in only when almost stopped (under 5 km/h).

Hi terqel, could you please verify the meaning of change pattern ? Do you mean on a physical, visionary basis referring to the quadrant on the gearbox tunnel, or are you referring to the mechanical change pattern ?

With the 4 - speed box in the 280SL/SE/SEL, when startring from rest, normal acceleration from standstill, the car will move off in second gear and then change to 3rd and 4th. Accelerator kick-down or physical movement of the gear lever to the low (rearmost position) will engage first gear and hold it to its maximum, or when you move the lever to the next higher position.
