Helmet thanks for the video.

Replaced the ignition barrel in the 260E years ago.

Locksmith did exactly what the guy did in the video and fitted a new barrel.

A w124 is a little different Tim, however still easy to change if you can turn the key.

I believe the ignition barrel in the 300SE was replaced as well before I purchased the car.

That guy's key for his 300D had snapped off and stuck inside the old barrel.

Watching the video the guy could turn the key you can see and hear the radio come on.

Helmet, thanks heaps for finding and posting the video. At one stage, I was unable to turn the key, but thankfully after several frustrating attempts, I was able to get ignition and start the car. However, by that time I had figured that there was no way that I should remove the key, and I decided that a new barrel was the only proper solution to what could be a 'break-down" situation at any time without warning.

Whilst the video purports the removal to be an easy step, reality on DAVID's car proved quite the opposite. I realize, of course, that never having attempted removal of the barrel in my own right, I was just a tad timid with my attempts to insert a suitable wire. Thus, discretion became the better part of valour and I decided to engage the services of a professional locksmith. BTW, try and get one of them nowadays - very busy and very expensive, as it turned out.

The problem with David's job mainly centred around the unscrewing of the black surround that fits around the barrel. On the 116' it's well nigh impossible to get a tool to grip the part to unscrew it. In the end, even the professional had no end of difficulty unscrewing that part. He also had a lot of difficulty finding the hole to compress the spring loaded locking tab. So, the job is definitely not quite as straight forward as the video suggested. In addition, one can't be ham fisted or indiscriminate - the last thing one would want is to have the barrel drilled out. Regard. Styria

The easiest way to wear out the Key and Barrel, prematurely, is to have a Kilo of additional Keys swinging on the Key Ring.
Now I must go check little Wifey's Key Ring.

Hi Sean, that of course is what Kent Bergsma is talking about - take all those keys off and have a separate keyring arrangement. BTW, have many of you guys watched his little videos - I quite like them but, of course, he doesn't give much away. Nevertheless, they are informative. Regards Styria

I have watched all his w116 video's. :) especially when I went to do my front brake pads today . and found right front calliper has a jammed piston. I don't have tools to fix at brothers so removed calliper and have taken to brake specialist to have fixed. :(

I was lucky enough to get away with it for as long as I did.
What extended my luck was to have a new ORIGINAL key cut, rather than just having a worn key copied.
I supplied the body number to Mercedes, and they cut an original key. Cost? $30.

I've been wondering if the Current crop of Key Transponders would also wear
with extra weights dangling on them. Maybe too soon to tell ?

MB Spares posted a pic of a W203 write off due to issues with the key transponders, a 2003 I think.

Had a good look at the Key for the 107, ..... Magnifying glass reveled a lot of wear.
The spare key cut by local Locksmith has clean sharp edges. Its now the main key.

Question...If the Boot actuator, which is triggered by the key operated vacuum control in the Driver's Door , fails , i.e., the mechanical rod breaks ....can the Boot still be opened using the key in the push button . ??????????

Thanks Sean

Yes, if you have a master key that works in the lock.
