I am posing this query in relation to my 1989 420SEL. The new battery, according to Invoices, was installed some three years ago, and whilst there appear to be absolutely no problems, surely the time will come when it will have to be replaced. Thus, the question I have is this : Would it be just a simple matter of straight out removal/replace ? Are there any functions on the car that are likely to be affected ? Computer, Radio (non-standard) etc. ?

I would be grateful for any advice. Regards Styria

Hi Styria a aftermarket radio is unlikely to have a pin code so no issues there. They really didnt start that till the 90's as for the engine computer there really shouldnt be a problem with a new battery. The problem is surg related with jump starting not battery replacemen. Geoff

Great advice, one more thing would be to switch off an alarm if fitted and make sure your keys are not in the ignition.

Thanks guys for the info. Not being used to owning a "late" (later !) model than 1978, this had been of some consideration. I take it that the 420s have a computer ? If so, does anyone know its location ? Regards Styria

It is right behind the steering wheel Styria, does an amazing job of controlling the speed, steering and braking, and can also turn on the radio:D:D:D

.....it takes class to own one....and that's a serious issue in this instance. :D.....and indeed, I have tried to turn on the radio with my big toe - unfortunately, I couldn't find it - the toe, that is. This conversation is getting beyond funny - back to the computer and Citroens.
