A historic racer like Grant from South Africa is doing,
I know you like these cars.

A Ponton would be a blast, even a Finnie (like GrantV) would be also lots of fun, but the 116 has a V8 and is more stable and I like the look..

That is only 25 kilos.... But that could be an advantage....

My car is an SE and it feels more nimble around a track than my SEL does, so these small changes in weight and wheelbase do make a marked difference to the feedback to the driver.

My SEL also feels lots heavier at the front even though there is only 50kg difference between the M117 V8 and the 6.9 V8.

Also, just on the question of mods and rough expenditure so far, from my view.

If I had my time again, the order in which I'd do things would be:

Brakes (Calipers Reco'd and Comp Pads, also braided lines)
Suspension (lowered, firmed, custom springs, all bushings and control arm bushings etc. Shocks - new or old but re-built for track use, basically firm up the entire suspension / steering assembly)
Steering wheel (good sports wheel)
Tyres (semi-slicks of some sort - yoko a048's as mentioned previously)
Diff (3.46:1, CIG Locked)
Weight reduction (absolutely everything that doesn't need to be there)
Cold Air Induction (560SEL air housing or custom piping to gain clean cool air)
Throttle Linkage adjustments / tuning & also Air/Fuel mixture tuning (on dyno)

What I've done, and costs:

Timing Chaing, Guides, Tensioner etc - $900
Leads - $200
Rotor Button & Dist Cap - $250
Brake Calipers - Reco'd $4-500? (can't remember, Styria can note this)
Brake Pads, QFM Comp 3's - $500 (is that right Ian) for front & rear
Suspension (everything mentioned above) - $2,400
Tyres (been through a few 2nd handy's but for new ones) - $1400 [4 x yoko a048's]
Weight Reduction - Time
Dyno Tune - $50
Diff - $300
Services (Oil / Filter, Transmission Filter / tranny oil, Plugs etc) - at least every 2-3 events - $unknown
Miscellaneous hoses & other small parts - $2-300

COUNTLESS PARTS / EXPERIMENTS FOR DEVELOPMENT PURPOSES - $$$$UNKNOWN - but definitely not less than about $2-3k
(This included different heads, diff's, intakes, and other misc parts)
Most of the time the development would reach a stage where the realisation was it wasn't worth proceeding for the outcome.

I don't wanna scare you Michel, but if I were to count everything i've spent on my track car to date (including prior to it becoming a track car), I'm confident it would be somewhere between 10-15K.

With the next project being a re-grind of CAMS, M116 Heads & Possible Forced induction - that figure will probably be pushed to around the 25K mark - if it goes ahead.

Who know's where it'll end up, and thank christ that my Dad doesn't know how much i've spent on the car. :eek:

All in all, doesn't matter how much you spend, the main thing I take away from my time on the track (and much thanks to advice that Ian has provided from his years of experience) is the skills that I've obtained from doing this.

I'm keen for you to go check it out, and might come along if the time is right - it could be a stund double for the gold 6.9.

Have been watching that one for a while in AC - there's also a older 250SE going cheap, but it has a hole in one of the cylinders :(

Again without being too picky, the starting price is already at my limit and it's in Melbourne.... :eek:


I reckon that other 450SEL here in canberra with Black Leather interior will be dropped under $1K listing soon.... he's still got it. Maybe worth a shot at getting it for $500?!!? ...if you're serious about $500 that is?! :p

Both of these cars look 'reasonable' to Michel's requirements, although he'd probably want to pay a little less that these asking prices. The first one is a curious car - headlight wiper(s) a la 6.9 and option on others, badged as a 450SEL but the Vin number shows it to be a 450SE.

Isn't it also amazing how much mre room there is under the bonnet once you fit a Yankee V8. Regards Styria

Sorry for any confusion, this belongs here

Mmmmm, I have a 300SEL 3.5 sitting downstairs at the factory and know someone who wants the interior as it is parchment leather.
I bought it as a parts car for Six 3 but it is too good to part out but to much work to restore to road worthy to justify the spend.

The 3.5 has a 3.57 diff ratio with a single spinner, in my parts bin I have the LSD clutch pack from my old 6.3 diff and a 4.01 crown wheel and pinion from a 280SE diff....
With 109 airbag springs the suspension adapts to the conditions via the leveling valves so "tightening" the suspension is not an issue.

This may happen .... Michel...
