I know I'm a slow learner in my declining years ! BUT even my young son in law agrees with me that if we continually depend on Sat Nav to find our way around Sydney, we loose the ability to navigate without it. We forget how to get from A to B
Use it or loose it comes home to roost.........ask me how I know

Interestingly, this topic suddenly applied to my satnav experience during early March storm that hit the airport area and southern side of Sydney suburbia.

Bad weather, bad satnav route calculus and intricate network of streets make any SatNav useless. It had me stuck in traffic simply because of bad gps signal (coluds), inefficiency in getting traffic info in time, endless "recalculating" and stubborn attempt to get me cross town trough streets simply because ED and M2 seemed a bit busy.
namely, cross town to my home would take 90+ minutes in current traffic, when I stopped and force it to use M2 it calculated 10km more but travel time was about 70min, in reality was about 60.

It is a good tool but not a replacement for a man-compas and good common sense.

Do you guys, or others for that matter, require the assistance of a GPS system ? Having lived in Sydney for more than fifty years, having travelled extensively as an Insurance representative for at least twenty, I seem to know most parts almost like the back of my hand. Very seldom do I find the need for outside help.

For instance, when travelling from home to Glenorie, there are some busy times on the roads that a GPS system is likely to recommend using. You'd be dstuck in heavy traffic. Thus, I use various side streets, not necessarily short-cuts, that enable me to avoid the heavy traffic. At times like that, the GPS system would fail. Regards Styria
