PS - the Beemer's blurb states "Other than replacing the valve rocker cover gaskets and plugs, the car has required very little maintenance" - then the condition report has more crosses than a monastry.

I suppose "it moves without them" is one definition of "required".:)

The 6.9 has in fact a new interior in GAHH leather, and the colour is called Mahogany. It replaced the Tobacco Brown velour interior, and whilst we were at it, it was decided to fit new carpets and carry out work on door trims etc. This is a cracking good car, it's had a lot of money spent on it, and if the owner was in a slightly better situation financially speaking, that car would never be put on the market. It is fitted with the high compression engine and one can only hope that it will remain in Sydney.

We also resprayed the exterior, and it is my understanding that the paint is still in excellent condition. Regards Styria

The 6.9 looks like a top notch example... Regarding the blurb, will they ever get their facts about the suspension technology straight? If they knew what they were trying to describe, it would make their ads so much more professional and convincing.

I love the brown. :)

Hi Lukas, I have looked at the report provided by Shannons, as well as reading the summary of the history of the car, such as it is. I think it needs to be made clear that it has to be at least two years, perhaps even going on to three, since I have seen the car, or let alone done any work on it.

One could question some aspects regarding the dollars and cents issues as quoted by Shannons, but it is not my place to do so. If one looks at the report, there seem to be just two problems - fuel and heating/cooling controls. Not having seen the car for this length of time, again I can't really add any further comment.

I'll say it again though - this is a cracking good car, but it has not been 100% rebuilt - if it had been , it would owe the owner at least $100k., if not more, because after all, you're looking at an equivalent new price in today's terms of close enough to $350K. Back in 1979, 6.9s sold for just short of $A80k. - almost thirty years ago. So you're buying second hand, and no matter how good a car is, you can always spend more. That's a simple fact of an old car's folly. There is also a 300 SEL 6.3 being sold by the same owner - I can tell everyone that even after twelve months of standing and after installing the re-charged the battery, it took two turns of the starter motor to have the engine run freely and without falter. What's more, in twelve months of standing, the car did not drop even five millimeters. So that's another car to consider favourably. Regards Styria

6.9 sold for $9,500 - good value given the long-term history I suppose

380SL for $22,500 - very respectable

6.3 for $12,000

Dodgy Bimmer for $3,600

It's almost unthinkable that the 6.9 sold for as little as what it has - whoever bought got an absolute bargain in monetary terms at the expense of the seller. As I have previously said, the seller is experiencing difficult times, otherwise the car would never have come up for auction.

He also owned the 6.3, as well as the Laverda 750cc Sportsbike - the 6.3 sold well at that figure, but then again it wasn't a bad car. Very good mechanically, just needed rear air bags that were badly cracked on the outside. BTW, can anyone tell me how a Fiat 500cc Bambino can sell for almost as much as the 6.9 ? I am just shaking my head. Could it be that it would be so much cheaper to restore, or what is it ? Curiosity value ? Maybe a bit like a Citroen 2CV. Regards Styria

Yes it is unbelievable that a 6.9 with new interior seats and carpets 15 inch bundts new paint and engine work sold for 9500 what does that say about the rest of our cars values  but off course only if you are going to sell:)

Seems no secret that 6.9s are undervalued, but for this particular car the average buyer wouldn't have known all of the (good) history of it, whereas they did know the current faults. Comparing it to the south coast car in that light, it may have been expensive.

The price fetched for the 6.9 is simply awful... I actually gasped when I saw the result. $9,500?? Surely not.
I paid close to that figure (well, more, actually) just over a year ago for my 1976 450SE, which is in particularly good condition, but not a patch on the 6.9 (based on the photos supplied).

The 6.3 was also a good buy for a lucky individual.

The 750iL. $3,500. Meh - about what I'd have figured for an auction. It didn't look to be anything special.

The interesting thing with Shannons ads is that the km / miles traveled are not listed.

I looked at the 6.9 and yes, the figure paid is very low. The 6.3 was not available for inspection when I went to Shannons and the BMW was ready for the crusher - whoever paid $3500 paid $3000 too much.
Would I have paid $9500 for the 6.9? Well actually, no - for reasons of my own.

Benz-Boy

Hi BenzBoy, you've obviously seen something that others haven't (for reasons of your own). So, what would you have paid for it ? Regards Styria

No - there was nothing I saw that turned me away from the car. It just did not appeal.
