Mercedes post war weights

Hi guys just a interesting observation but most people would not guess that the modern Mercedes weigh more that our coveted older models.For example the W100 600 Grosser has a Tare weigh of 2600Kg while the Pullman is 2770Kg . The W109 300SEL 6.3 is 1830Kg . W116 450SEL 6.9 is 1985Kg . The W126 lost weigh over the W116. The W126 560SEL was 1830Kg . Then the W140 S600 was 2190Kg or 360Kg heavier than the previous model S Class . The W220 600 was split 2035Kg for 5.8 V12 or 2135Kg for the BiTurbo 5.5 V12 . The W220 S65 was 2220Kg so 30Kg heavier than the W140 600 . The W221 is 2210Kg for the 600 or 2275Kg for the S65 or 85Kg heavier than the W140 600 which most people think is the heaveist S Class . Now this will surprise people the W240 or Maybach is heavier than the W100 . The litest Maybach is the 57S at 2747Kg or 147Kg heavier than a standard 600 grosser . the 57 Maybach is 2800Kg or 30Kg heavier than a W100 600 pullman . And The 62 Mayback is 2855Kg or 155Kg heavier than a W100 pullman these are the factory standard weights excluding options or add ons.Surprising i think you would agree. Geoff

300SE is a lightweight at 1550 kilos compared to some of the weight of the other Mercedes mentioned in this post.

Hi Tim your car wieghs 15Kg less than a 2012 W204 C300 which is 1565Kg . Or 60Kg less than a 2012 Camry Hybrid at 1610Kg . Or a Ford Focus Titanium is almost the same weight at 1532Kg . Geoff so really at that weigh it makes your smaller than a midsize car

The Ford and Toyota are like Arnotts biscuit tins.

Heaven forbid if I were involved in an accident I would want to be driving the 300SE compared to the Ford or Toyota.

My 230E and 260E might have weighed more than the 300SE?

My Dad's 280SEL W116 would have been heavier than the other 3 Merc's I have owned.

1490kg thanks that info Geoff so the 300SE is 60kgs heavier.

I wonder how much the 230E W123 weights I am guessing 1600kg maybe more?

Our green 280SEL W116 was a heavy car I miss the 280SEL the 'green machine'!

Hmmm - and my Spirit is 2300KG. That's because it has 12 cows and a forest of walnut trees on the inside.
Add another 1000KG for the PII but all that weight would be lethal in an accident - the driver would be speared to death by the hand controls on the steering wheel even in the lightest of accidents. Now that makes a Camry look like the pinnacle of safety. Maybe I should do a trade?

Blasphemy? Nah.
In this case the "mine is bigger than yours" is dangerous. I would not like to run the PII into anything and live to tell the tale. Killed on impact would be safer.

Hi Mark just becauce something is good for you does not mean you want to try it. Driving white goods no thank you THE CAMRY IS THE NEW VOLVO .Driving a Camry is like telling me to eat a box of chocolates and to eat the box and leave the chocolates . If i have to i will always pick style over percieved substance. than is why i like older cars over new bland cars . I own a new car becauce it keeps me safe at home. not becauce it is what i want to drive. Geoff

BenzBoy: certainly, a Camry would be stronger with a decent pair of chassis rails under it, like a P11!

On a less frivolous note, the main reason for the weight reduction across the whole range between the W116 and the W126 series has to do with the fact that the later models used HSLA steel in their bodies, saving something like 200 kg per vehicle.

HSLA = High Strength Low Alloy, at least that's what DB called the stuff.
