Interesting in the fact that almost every other manufacturer except BMW has dropped the inline six in favour of a V configuration due to performance capabilities found much easier in the V6.
However, the inline variety is a far smoother engine that would suit what MB is trying to achieve.

I also remember Mercedes maintaining and insisting that there was no need for a four valve arrangement. The two inlet, and one exhaust valve layout they were using at the time apparently offered better torque. It is also well known, or perhaps well proved, that an inline six is the sweetest of all engines. Perhaps with technology available today, and in the future, a one litre six cylinder engine may be all that would be needed to take the place of a 3.5 litre V6 - who knows ? Regards Styria
