Mercedes 280SEL - W116

A nice video showing all features of what is essentially quite a rare version of the W116 series - I believe there were fewer 280SELs than 6.9s produced. Regards Styria

Of the w116 class the most numerous were the 280 SE, and the 450 SEL.
The scarcest was the 280 SEL, followed by the 6.9.

Sources suggest 350SEL scarcest with 4266 followed by 280SEL with 7032 and the 6.9 with 7380.

You're spot on David. I have reason to believe that the 350SEL was still produced (perhaps to special order) as late as 1978 ? Does anyone know more precise details ? We all know that the 3.5 engine started in the W108 and W109 chassis, with the D-Jet injection system which was discontinued ca. 1975. I wonder if the 3.5 litre engine in its later years still had the old system fitted, or it may have been updated to the later K-Jet system. Regards Styria

I stand corrected slightly.

The 450 (M117) SE / SEL came with both D Jetronic, as well as K Jetronic.
I see no reason why that should differ with the M116 engine.

....yes David, but the 350 engine is a M116 engine - don't know if that would have any bearing on the matter ? Regards Styria
