Mercedes 170 goes racing




Reminds me of a comment Styria made a few months back about 170's being very skinny and tall cars.....you could imagine the car toppling over in a corner!

It almost looks like the whole car is twisting with the body roll. I bet the owner was cheesed off that somebody else must have already had "170" as a number and this guy had to settle for "171"

Any idea what this event was or where it was or how long ago it was?

The front split bumpers means that it is a pre war or very early post war car, so maybe late 40's, early 50's?

At the time old Benzes were very cheap and GI's who were occupying the country were well known for drinking, hooning around in old cars and trashing them.



Re the chassis, yes they are not very strong, look at this picture, you can see it almost splitting in half

That beast looks pretty strong, see how it's held together with tape?!

I had the pleasure of seeing a fully restored 170 (by MB Spares) with numberplates MB 170v. And for style, they got it. Beautiful car.
And now seeing that someone stuck some numbers on and put the pedal through the floor - now, i really like em!

You could imgine the skinny little tyres squealing as it went through the corner,

I so love that radiator cap base on the 170's, I think they should have done a miniaturised version on the w116, like on a w114,

Des, I think you will find that the chassis is strong. It's just Archimedes' principle at work.
Mind you, that understeer is severe.......
