Just so much undervalued and, at times, maligned. If the truth be known, they keep their age extremely well, and I have seen the one in Helmet's showroom which is absolutely magnificent. It is for sale and anyone wanting to buy a first class example of the Ch. 126 series, this would be close to tops.

Thanks for posting that article , brings back memories of when the W126 was released . Sold the 380SE today, it's being picked up tomorrow :)

Helmet, indeed pleasing to know that you have sold the car - it was certainly beyond criticism and presented very well. The new owner should be very pleased with his purchase.

Getting back to the test itself by the author - it was unusually subjective, and written with a lot of common sense and well expressed. I can only surmise how good the car may have been when new. I can take a slight cue from what he is talking about and the way he assesses the car by the 420SEL I am driving as a stop gap for Gleaming Beauty. One aspect that surprises me greatly is the fact that Mercedes would go to the trouble of engineering two different engine blocks configuration, plus the comprehensive referral to the European engines with their power advantage. It is something that I can attest to with the two types of engines in the 6.9 range. Their behaviour in sound and acceleration differences is quite noticeable. Yes, it is a comprehensive and well written test. Regards Styria

As I read Wheels quite rarely these days, I'm not familiar with who is or isn't writing.
I confused Peter Robinson with another Journalist who is no longer with us (and whose name escapes me). :eek:

Using the prices given in the roadtest and feeding them through the RBA inflation calculator, I arrive at 2012 equivalent prices of $196,000 and $230,000 for the two models. Certainly not cars for the masses. Benz products are relatively cheaper today.

Hi Geoff I was aware the 380SEL was Wheels magazine car of the year in 1981 and rightly so!

W126 S-Class one of the finest Mercedes ever made I hope I am not sounding biased when I say that?
