Beautiful construction, but just cause it looks good doesn’t mean it works well...

I didn’t want to use generic tips & the quality is first class stainless! The photo doesn’t do them justice, but that might’ve been taken before polishing. The spot weld marks were actually polished out. I have another set which may go on a 6.9

A bit of trivia for info fans is the current AMG logo is a combo of the original company letters, plus the Mercedes Sportline identifier indicating merger of the two companies...

New tips will definitely be an improvement!

Seems most of the rear bumpers had offset cutouts where the pipes from the rear muffler required sharp bends. However the AMG exhaust was straight out of the muffler. Did they change the rear bumper too??

I find it funny that many owners strive for an original AMG exhaust or at least a copy of same.... Don’t they know they’re a 30 year old design?? There’s been a few changes since then and lessons have been learnt by the mistakes of others.

I wonder if it is a series 1 vs Series 2 thing? Here is my car next to a Series 1 SEC. A bit hard to see because of the angle of the photo, but it does not look like the cut out is there.

I suspect the AMG thing is bragging rights at cars and coffee!

You may be onto something there! I’m not 100% on the external differences BW S1 & S2 but it appears like the rear bars on S2 had a lower skirt, hence the need for the cutout?? Perhaps S1 had no cutout whatsoever?

Looks like a very good option & something I’m very keen to try out on the SEC!

I’ve just been doing some calculations & if you believe one school of thought, exhaust primaries should be a minimum length for optimum flow. Of course space is the biggest issue here, but by my math (using optimum diameter pipe), the minimum primary lengths are as follows:

560: 538mm
6.9: 632mm

I can see why some tuners try to use equal length primaries, but they don’t seem to realise that tight bends will also restrict flow...

But what diameter pipe are you considering?

This was based on a minimum ID of 40.5mm (1.59”) for the 560. Minimum ID of 41.5mm (1.63”) for the 6.9.

I was speaking to a mate who races a 450SE & his mods have been recommended by a well known racing team in V8SC. They specified an OD of 1 7/8” (47.63mm) and a minimum primary length of no less than 28” (711.2mm)!! Of course that’s in an ideal world with no space limitations.... So based on a wall thickness of 2mm that leaves an ID of 43.63mm. Not far off my calculations which were minimum sizes not taking into consideration size availability....

BTW he also said you should run a twin 3” (76.2mm) OD exhaust which I think is far too big!! But then again his car does produce 440hp...

Interesting that his secondary ID is too small when compared to my calculations...
