why does the 500SE have a shorter wheelbase than other SWB W126?

I've seen this spec a few times, where the 500SE has unique measurements in terms of wheelbase size of any other W126. All the others, including the 560SE are the same except the 500.

Does anyone know why?

The 6.3 has a 15mm longer wheelbase than the rest of the W109 range and the W108 long wheelbase models, but it is due to the front subframe being located 15mm further forward than the others to increase the castor for high speed stability. The 500SE has a 5mm shorter wheelbase by the pic, due to the rear axle being mounted 5mm forward? Could it be a weight distribution solution? Is the 560 engine lighter or heavier than the 500?

Interesting, the only major difference I am aware of between a 500 and a 560 is that the 560 has a longer stroke. They are both M117 and both alloy. Not many 560SE were made, but not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I recall reading somewhere the 560 had a taller deck height to facilitate the longer stroke, minimal but taller. It was a much disputed fact.

Looks like I was wrong about the 560SE, its the same as the 500.

So the 500 and 560SE have the shorter wheelbase, but the 560 also has a higher ride hight.

260/300/420 have the normal wheelbase
but 500 and 560 have the 5mm shorter one.

I'll have to get out the brochure collection to see if the LWB cars are the same.

This all came about because I was looking for the width of the rear seat in SWB W126's so I can work out the max width of childseats to accommodate 3.

That being the case I'm thinking it will be due to a different diff centre and ratio to handle the extra power and torque.
