They were optional even in the series 1 cars, but were made standard in about 89 if I recall for drivers.

passengers became optional after the interior facelift around that time.

Neither of my W126's have airbags, but my previous 88 and 89 both did. The 89 had a passengers airbag as well.

Air Bag warning ? I replaced the centre Air Vents as an assembly on my W204
C Class 2011, with one online from the UK ( $100 landed ) It now has a warning light just below the Hazard Light switch which lights up each Start and says "Passenger Airbag not activated" (or not on) Goes out when Started. Dealer not sure what it means. Original unit did not have this display ???
Both Airbags were replaced under the Recall.
