W126 Exhaust Performance Upgrades

Well I’ve already upgraded Dora’s exhaust (560SEL) since it needed to be replaced anyway. It’s a 2 x 2 1/4” system using 2 x hot dogs and a stainless HOLDEN VE SS rear muffler and no CATs (Euro engine).

The fitter had issues at the rear since I wanted to use later model stainless tips that were rather long and it didn’t leave much space for the muffler. As a result it’s a little cramped, but it does work well and sounds great. I was thinking of future options and upgrades on other cars being another 560SEL Euro and of course the 6.9s. On a 6.9 I’d probably look at a 2 x 2 1/2” system. Although a single system can perform well and sound good, I think a 3” system would be too low to the ground for a W116 or W126 V8.

Anyway I’ve started looking for a replacement for the original kidney mufflers and thought it might be possible to then delete the rear muffler and make it easier to fit the tips...

Unecessary on a 6.9 since the space for the rear muffler is far bigger than a 560SEL (plus the 6.9 centre muffler is different), here’s some aftermarket options...

Not much luck on my idea since almost no one sells single ended mufflers. I’m still thinking of ideas and searching for suppliers...

The exhaust you posted at the top of the thread looked good. Are you wanting to add the kidneys because it’s too loud or you want it to resemble stock?

The aim was to delete the rear muffler altogether due to the lack of space available for it and the long tips. Plus a kidney muffler design lends itself to a straight through bi-pass should the need arise for a loudness button...

What are you trying to achieve Mark. I fitted duel 3 inch exhaust to my 454 C10 with Flowtech extractors. Exhaust system ran 1 Flowmaster Super 10 series each side. I found while I loved the sound they droned a little to much under lite throttle. So then fitted 3 inch hotdogs to each side and loved it . They removed drone from Flowmasters when added to the exhaust.

I was impressed with it at the time and saved the link. This could be a way of getting your kidney mufflers at an acceptable price.

Yes.. Yes and Yes..... but I had queried the wisdom of altering the Exhausts on modern Cars. Back in the olden days freeing up exhausts by replacing Factory items , built down to a price, produced results... but today ?
All exhausts are designed to comply and are part of a whole computer controlled loop.

At $2683 landed here I think my idea will go on the back burner for now! That doesn’t include installation, rear pipes or tips. Valve-tronic is extra too! All for the sake of not struggling to fit the rear muffler and tips in a short space. And I can probably live without the open (and illegal) system that valve-tronic would allow.
