I know what. How about maybe, just maybe a phonecall to the Shannon's boss and the offer of free advertising on all teamw116 cars if they fix Cam up with a predated cover note for the 280S.:D

Just got back to Capitown.. (Canberra)

Pics are up: http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff89/SELfor50/Team%20116%20Car%203/

Oscar, Michel your offers are greatly appreciated!! ;)

Sometime this week i'll have to organise a car trailer and head to albury to pick it up.

I can't believe the level of 'f*kwit-ism' that's been displayed by the 'mob' who towed me to their holding yard. First of all it was $300 for a towe only 15km's up the road. Secondly it'll be $16.50 /day after 72hrs if it's not picked up.
I rang them yesterday to confirm if it would be ok if i:
Brought a radiator, distributor & distributor amplifier (as even without opening the bonnet i'm pretty confident these are the only things that were actually damaged - it's mainly cosmetic) whether i could spend an hour or so under the car to change these things in order to drive it back to canberra during the day.

Answer: "Mate, you can't take that car anywhere until you fix the bonnet and quarter panel. We have a panel beating shop there that can fix it! We can't just let people use our yard as a mechanic's workshop."

Me: How's get f*kd grab ya?!

I told him i'll just bring a car trailer and take it...only issue will be getting it on the trailer if it doesn't drive. -Any suggestions?? Will a hand crank winch work?

Once I can pry the bonnet open to inspect the internals I can confirm what actually needs doing, until then I don't know.

BUT.... Michel, we may need to discuss options of leaving this youngun with Jerry to work his magic?!?? As far as I can tell, and you may be able to summate it off the pictures - it's only really the front passenger quarter panel that need beating / replacing and the bonnet replacing. As it's destined for the track, the paints not really an issue.

Anyway... I'm gonna enjoy a few glasses of scotch on the rocks tonight, not much else I can do right now. :)

Looks like the bumper and bumperette survived... and the lower valance panel looks OK.

Where's the grille?

Oscar's recently chopped up his yellow beast, I bet he has the LHS front 1/4 ready to cut-and-shut onto your beastie..

Going to be an expensive p.i.t.a ... I can't think of any quick way out of this mess...

Yes a hand-cranked winch will be perfectly capable of dragging that car up onto the trailer.

May as well start collecting parts already. I can contribute a lower-grille and probably a turn signal.

Wreckers in Melbs have the panels you need already painted white - its just getting them to remove them and freight them to Cbr that might cost the $.

Holly S&*^! Watched a movie the other day called "U Turn" it sounds like you're dealing with the mechanic played by Billy Bob Thornton.

Pic 7 of 21 looks like you can see the rotor? So sorry Cam.:( , this looks sad, but not the end.

Ditto on the hand winch. I've loaded that way three times now. There's one on your hire trailer isn't there?? The only problem I've had after hiring three different types of quality trailers, with different lengthed ramps is that the exhaust WILL rip off behind the transmission at the trailer's lip if I don't ease the grade of the ramps by using bricks or something as thick as a railway sleeper. It happened to me once with the red 280S, once with the brown 280SE. A third trailer I used also would've contacted exhausts had I not propped the ends of the ramps up.

Your trailer may be different, but keep it in mind, and also use riggers gloves. There wouldn't be a hire trailer out there without frayed steel cable on the winch.

I took some photos earlier so you can look at what the milan brown 280 which has a straight front end compared to the yellow one. Front quarters are pretty much the same but the brown one is better. Although it sounds you've already got some good parts to get you going again, I'll forward these pics so you can check it out. Also got a headlight for ya. Not perfect but it'll do.

Fark, just noticed the posts about hitting the roo. Glad you are ok, Cam. At least the car can be fixed. Let me know if you need help with anything.

No daily driver? What happened to your ute?

Grill is in the boot - totally destroyed.
In my moments of anger after coming to a halt, after inspecting the damage and trying to get the bonnet open i simply ripped the grill off. It's twisted and torn in about 2-3 different spots from memory. (Yes, it was sorta like Arnie in Conan)

Thanks for the offer of parts / assistance fellas!! ;)
For now my goal is to get her back home and then begin the revival. If it wasn't a manual I would've grabbed my bag, started walking and never looked back.

Great advice on using the trailer, hopefully all goes well.

bb, Ute got sold to accomodate the arrival of this girl. Had to happen.
If I hit the roo in the ute, i probably wouldn't be here. Collided at about 100km/h, and the ute probably wouldn't have stayed as straight as the 116 when entering the ditch in the middle of the road.

....just really wanna get a look inside that bonnet.

Hey I hear this thing was picked up and assessed today as to the suitability for repair / racing, and the prognosis isn't great....

It would take a particularly special owner to make this into the Team116 car #3....

Don't they look like they were made for each other?? :D

Before any story telling occurs, few things I gotta say.

First of all, absolutely every 116 enthusiast i've met both online and offline has been extremely helpful and always willing to lend a hand for a fellow enthusiast.

However, that aside I have to say a f*kn massive thankyou to both Ian (B13) and Simon (Oscar)! ;)

Over the last couple weeks Ian's done me more favours than I can count on hands and Simon's also come through at the 11th hour, making me regain a little faith in the human race. Without slurring out soppy sh!t, i'll just say Thanks Fella's!! I really do owe you both a great deal. ;)

Honorable mention to all the other Topklasse members, more specifically Michel & Styria, who offered their assistance. It's also greatly appreciated.

For now, I know this baby is in safe hands and i'll hand the mic to Oscar to continue. :)

Ahem, thanks Cam:D

Well where do I start. At the start of the day the idea was to save the 280 from the pound, take it back to Cams then sort out things from there. Wherever work was to be carried out I was going to deliver at a later date, the front bit, the bonnet bit, and other bits to fix her up. Whatever could be used basically. Cam offered the car to me a number of times, I kept saying no:rolleyes: but after a few calls home and to a mate that can weld we stopped somewhere between Albury and Gundagai and I thought, why not take the car to the parts.

So at the moment, the car's under my custodianship as a TeamW116 car and whilst here I'm going to fix it with bits from the turd 280 and parts from the cut up yellow one. I'll be able to rid myself of those two finally. Sooner, most likely later, but hopefully this year, it will be doing hillclimbs in Canberra by Cam and I.

Now, the plan. I had a gut feeling from looking at the photos prior that the engine would be ok. I got the lid up tonight and well you guys be the judge.
The front bumper, cross member and I think what is the chassis rails up to the bumper seem straight. To my mind so far we're looking at
radiator, The whole trip the only fluid leaked was coolant and not that much either, but the rad is cactus.
oil cooler,
tie rod,
complete dizzy,
upper front section including radiator support frame, headlight surround,
quarter panel,
bonnet,
grill,
there's a few other things but my eyes are blurry, I need a coffee. I might just post the pics. Check the flat spot:eek: Brushed concrete freeways are a menace.

Obvious cosmetic damage aside, the front of the motor and LH front suspension all looks pretty good. Looks like the engine fan has knocked the dizzy cap off, which would explain why Cam couldn't restart the thing after the stack.

Possibly remove the radiator fan and cowling, put the dizzy back together and try to start it...

Question, where is the ignition amplifier box??

I thought the radiator fan must have hit the dizzy too. But I've found out since it was the top oil cooler hose. I'm not sure if the oil cooler may be able to be used again but the top oil hose is cripmed and "S" shaped now and is wet with oil but not dripping. I reckon if the motor was running it would be spurting. It needs to be renewed. The lower hose is ok.

I think what's going to happen from here on in is that the good red 280 is going to be supplying parts due to compatability and I think it's going to be easier to repair the front end of the crashed one than convert the red one to manual.

Do I need an oil cooler? The k-jet 280 has the wide radiator, the red S has the rad+oil cooler arrangement (same as the white one) but both apares also have A/T cooler hose attachments unlike the manual:confused: Can I use either of these radiators?

I can't find ignition amplifier box. So I had a look at red. It hasn't got one either:confused:

I'm confident that a new dizzy will see it start, but obviously I don't want it to run for very long with the coolant and oil leak.

Given that its going to have a hard life on the track its probably better to get it running with a oil cooler. Just use the auto radiator and leave the auto connections unconnected... its just a loop of piping inside the bottom radiator tank which ATF runs thru to cool it a few degrees before returning it to the trans.

Maybe 280S has no ignition amplifier box... one less thing to worry about I suppose. Jeez they're a basic car compared to the V8s we know and love.

Good to see some pics of under the hood. I didn't think the damage would be too bad..

Not a massive list of things to do. The hardest part will definately be the panel work and what's required there.

Also on the 280s, even the rear view mirror is smaller than the V8's. It was built to race!

Oscar, you're definately a W116 Salvage Specialist!!!

ps. I reckon Oscarette probably hates me now that you've bought another 116 home?! ;)

As long as Oscarette has a car park for the Terri she's happy, though she was relieved that I was coming home sooner too. The trip for me was 643km as opposed to 900 or so by not going to Canberra.

I think the panel work will be the hardest too. Particularly straightening the inner left guard. Tomorrow I'm going to start cutting. It's sad to see the red one condemned now too especially as many parts look immaculate but after 18+months, it's time, and you couldn't ask for a better donor car. By the end of this I'll have enough w116 seats to furnish our lounge room, shed and to go around the dinner table.:D

Thanks for the A/T cooler info Ian. There's nothing really to worry about there with a straight swap.
