Just out of interest who here has a high mile w116?
Whats your speedometer reading at?
What model w116 is it?

How about we set the starting line at 300,000k's plus?

My sig is outdated and I'd have to check again but my 1979 280SEL has done a nice 550,000 kms or so.
It's a strong motor, it needs new injectors and a vacuum leak fixed, but remarkably it's oil consumption is very good and even booting it to the redline I fail to see any smoke (if there is it's too small to see while driving).

My 350's odometer doesn't work (it's one of those more neglected cars) and it's stopped at 370,000Kms, so who knows what it actually has at the moment. But it does need new valve stem rings and oil consumption is a little scary unless driven really sedately (But power is fantastic).

Your numbers seem to be out of allignment, I have noticed whenever a car of this period crosses every one thousand k mark it only takes one or two k's for the numbers to all allign themselves again.

325,xxx on the SE, and 345,xxx on the SEL, although the odo on the SEL has stopped spinning.

Hi Des, my "Gleaming Beauty" showed 204k.s when I bought her in August, 1995. Have swapped speedo a couple of times (for no good or devious reason) and presently she sports a twin miles/kilometers speedo just to be different.

The mileage must be close to in excess of 350k. and she is still pulling well with no apparent problems with the engine. Regards, Styria

My W126 has done 333,000km, my wifes C180 315,000km not a W116 guys don't shoot me lol. However my Mum's old 1977 white 280SEL now in the hands of an elderley gentleman in Hobart has clocked, that's right boys over one million km's and I'm lead to belive it is still pounding the pavement after all those miles.

My 1979 450SEL has done just over 340,000km. It feels as if it could easily go for another few hundred thousand if correctly maintained.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is Des. I thought someone might say that when I took the pic, but having driven it today it appears to work and align just fine. Maybe just the way it stopped that time or something, I'm not sure.

Our W123 230 today reads 345360k's
didn't buy it from the original owner, but oneday I run into him in the street and he commented that the motor had never been apart in it.

Uses about 1ltr of oil every 1,000k's, runs rough when cold, timing chain is a bit rattlely but she is happy to cruise at 150KPH, not bad when these cars were only supposed to do 160KPH from the factory.

My old 280SEL has almost 420,000klm on the speedo. like yours Des it will drink 1ltr of oil every 1000klm but interestingly you will only see smoke out the back when you take the foot fully off the accelerator after a good fang

Apparently she did a 170km/h on a trip once

She hates starting in the cold and will run rough until she really starts to warm up but will always start first time, even after sitting around for months. She used to run a bit rough when warm but a new set of Beru ignition leads fixed that

My 280SE shows about 435 000 km. I bought it at 212 000km, and at the time there were several indications that the PO had wound it back a bit. Very annoying - I would like to see half a million on the clock. The engine was rebuilt at an indicated 259 000km, and now, almost 200 000km later, it uses almost no oil.

My red 6.9 shows 195 000km, and seems believable.
The blue 6.9 shows 148 000km, which seems unlikely.

My W140 has 315 000km, which seems true.

All this talk of high mileage, wow, my old lady has not yet reached 126,00KMs!
My 1992 W124 is on only 106,600 KMs.

In the UK and Brazil we really do value low mileages, although there are a lot of 'honest' people out there who wind back the odometer...that's why service records are so important...ask 116benz he won't buy without them!

Too bloody right, books tell a story, wether it be of lavished attention, or treated like a dogsbody. It also helps if you ever decide to sell on, people see what you have done and why you are asking the price you are.
