I still have the original Motorola from my 126 that I had fitted in 1979.

At the time it cost $3000 with handsfree kit and an extra $600 or so for the "Transportable pack". You could remove the unit from the boot and place it in a bag with a battery and second handset.

Another option at the time was a car kit where the original Motorola "Brick" slotted into a cradle in the boot and was worked by a cradle which bolted under the armrest - but that was $7,700.

Was that one of the 007 phones Bill?
I had one in a company car at the tender age of 23, My father was green with envy:cool:
I remember if you left it on it would flatten the car battery in 2 hours

I assume you mean 007 - as in bond type but it was a Motorola (?Called the 3,000)that was quite common at the time and worked on the old analogue network - it's still in my shed so I will look it up sometime.

We had pretty awful reception initially in the Hill Suburbs where I live and work but they just had the analogue system working well when they shut it down and moved to Digital - we had to start all over again.

Reception now is usually pretty good but my wife and i have recently moved from Iphone 3GS to 4S and I think the 3GS probably worked a little better in the fringe areas.

I mean the pre fix for the number was 007, I even remember my number was 007 21 38 38, then they went to the 018 prefix. The reception was very ordinary and there was no hands free kit available. The box in the boot was the size of a briefcase!

No - you must predate me - from memory the prefix was 018.

The rest of the number still survives as my wife's mobile number today.

Bill

I have heard some iphone cases will help with that,

unsure though which ones as I use mine without a case and don't have signal problems.

My new iPhone 4S is awful for dropouts!
My old 3S was far better (as a Phone).
But I love all the other functions

My $100 Android phone has a blue tick for rural coverage, no cover and makes excellent phonecalls.

I have applications on my phone that were all free Including Google maps powered GPS Navigation with voice command and control, A handy compass totally unaffected by my surroundings, a GPS Speedo that is more accurate than my Car speedo and it can run in HUD mode for night driving.

I can surf for porn using any number of browsers, it has excellent Text, pixt and MMS capabilities.

Excellent battery life and a host of other features too numerous to mention and more being written every day including a nifty little Car locator that also works on kids when you attach an inexpensive locator tag to their school bags :) .

To further elaborate on iphones.

My experience begins with a 3GS which was spectacularly good to me except for relatively poor battery life.

Iphone 4 - I've never had one but most of my family have had them and the aerial issue seems minimal if you use a case.

Iphone 4S - this is what I presently have and it has a redesigned aerial which is supposd to be better than a 4 but in reality seems inferior to my 3GS by a small margin - battery life is very good.

Many of my family have Androids and there is obviously a generational difference as well as a personal preference but as I have an ipad, iphone and Macbook Air as well as a Windows7 desktop I am finding icloud a great boon - one entry into any of them updates all my computers at the same time - Marvellous.

It just works.

All the gizmo's mentioned in association with the android are available on the iphone except - there are no known viruses on the iphone like the keylogger that has been found in the Android.

Thanks Tarek, Ive actually "Cracked" a few iPhones to make them work better but the basic fact is that the iPhone was never designed for the Australian phone system especially the 850 Mhz Next G (3.5 g) system so even with tweaking, cracking the phone for Root permissions and dialling the TX/RX power up its still not really good outside the capitol cities in Australia.

This is why Telstra get their own branded phones custom specced and built by ZTE corporation, cheap cheerfull and they work well.

Bill that keylogger issue was a bit of a beatup mate, it was a possibility more than a reality.

By the way, Western Australia has the best coverage of any state in Australia according to my mate in R&D due to the mining sector and a few other contributing factors such as minimal structural interference and cloud fade.

Basically due to the vast areas the system is a little different and Telstra also use Micro Cells in and around Perth and suburbs far more than any other city.

And for the Vodaphone users out there?

Jan 1st 2012 Voda are cutting the cord on rented telstra technology and spending a billion 5 on their own stand alone system which is nearing completion and im told will easily rival Telstra's system for phone and data.

Bill I am also a huge Mac fan and have a few at home plus I used to support a lot of Macs and air-port installations, sadly though it is in decline and the OS isnt as bulletproof as it used to be but as Apple doesnt have a target on its back unlike Micro$oft hackers really dont bother coz Mac is still "cool".

Apple products do have substantial issues these days, its just that you dont tend to hear about it as much unless you are on the MacGuru info feed and even then dissemination of information is discouraged.

There is a very funny Southpark episode that touches on Apples alleged shenanigans re the ULA (user license agreement) and its a huge poke at Apple saying we know the stuff you are doing, Be vewy vewy careful .

I am currently trialling an ASUS netbook that runs Android and its fast, very very fast and im enjoying the small challenges of not running Windows.

Cheers,
Tony

The big advantage to me of a Macbook Air is the near instant bootup and shut down.

I personally am more familiar with XP and 7 and keep old laptops and a large desktop for the obscure stuff that won't run on an apple but there are times (several per week) where the 15 second boot up works for me.

Mac OS is brilliant and id never argue the point, it is as close to running Unix (The genesis of both Windows and MacOS) with a graphic user interface (GUI) as you can get and everything is faster and cleaner on a Mac no doubt about it.

But Macbooks and Macs in general have their issues, Macbooks are fragile, hinges and cases damage way too often and their battery life is still short of what it could be because Apple over spec everything especially as they now run Intel chipsets (They have to).

Its a bit like dropping a Detroit 8V92TT into a 450SEL incase some day in the future someone somewhere wants to tow a house somewhere, Sure the car has lousy economy (3 litres per kilometre) but you can tow a HOUSE! :)

They are also still too damned expensive apart from the MiniMac which although ok is still limited to surfing the net and playing multimedia.

The great things about Mac's are that they are peerless when it comes to anything graphics or sound oriented and always will be, their processing power when it comes to real crunching is phenomenal from simple things like home video editing to composing and mixing music both of which I do on my ancient eMac faster and better than on my current quad core/4 gig windows notebook.

The hang up with Mac is its unfamiliarity, the consumers fear of new things has kept them away from Macs for years which is a shame because its very intuitive and Mac's are ready to run out of the box, Unpack it and plug it in and yer right to go.

I have a unique insight when it comes to comparisons though because I've dealt with Apple and IBM clones (PC's) side by side in large numbers both in corporate and educational institutions AND im not a Mac Guru nor a PC fanatic because when it comes to writing a service level agreement for a corporate to decide how much the next maintenance contract is worth honesty IS the best policy lol

What I am waiting for it to see how the Android books develop, the unit Im testing currently is on as soon as you open the lid and by the time the lid is fully open the Android logo has disappeared and your desktop is showing, quickly click on an item and before you count "One Onethousand" the App is up, Internet browsing thru Google Chrome browesr is also instant even with sites heavy with crap you have never been to.

Basically click and its there.... Scary clever Mr Google.

I have the best. Just the very simple, and very ordinary i-Phone 4. Never mind the 4S, the 3GS was just about as good as the 4 - I can dial out, I can receive calls, and the rest.....orrright, orrright, no need to say any more ! :D Do you want to buy my 4 ? Cheap at $690.00........ Regards Styria
