Sounds wayyyy over priced for me

why would a car "always garaged" need to be repainted, barely 20 years old?

Reconditioned radiator tells me they were too tight to spend the $500 on a new genuine behr radiator,

so what else has been skipped and skimped along the way?

I'm sorry but if you are going to ask that price for a car it has to be in as new condition, should be just like getting into a time machine and walking into the MB dealership and buying it new.

What is a SEA? Hard to tell from the pictures but is it a 350SEL?

Mileage is fairly high, not for these cars but for what you generally see in the bracket is cars that have been driven into the ground. Any car will keep on going and going with enough money spent on it.

I think SEA was used in South Africa for denoting an Automatic version
Or maybe this was misspelt instead of an 'L' as in SEL

[...] What is a SEA? [...]
I believe it to be South African nomenclature for any SE with auto trans. Whether or not that means the car was built in South Africa - who knows. Perhaps the owner/vendor is an ex-pat South African and just uses that nomenclature.

It's at Ocean Shores (locally known as Open Sores), just north of Byron Bay, about 45 minutes' drive from me.

No - not interested. Outrageous price, and it seems to have been a coastal car (Gold Coast respray, now at Ocean Shores), so I'd wager there's rust lurking somewhere. Also, I don't like Ikon Gold.

That is, wow, substantial money.....and I don't know the reason why. Mind you though, XY Falcon GT's Phase III are fetching in excess of $600,000.... Regards, Styria

Well it makes a certain 450SE cheap at $11,000!!!!
Now to the radiator, Daimler Des. A new radiator from M-B is $3000 plus GST and freight so a re-core is a sensible move. Mind you, at $23,000 I would expect gold-plating on the tyre lever.

$3,000? really?

I just ordered from my mechanic the genuine Behr radiator for a 250 and it was $450-500 mark

I wouldn't have imagined the price difference to be that great

For that money I'd be expecting a little more than just the tyre lever to be gold plated..:p

Interesting points that the car may have been SA built, as I recall 350SE's were built over there,

seems to lack the little reflectors under the tail lights and can't see if there is any in the headlights, I know my W123 has unique SA reflectors in the headlights, unsure if W116's do also.

Hello Gentlemen.

This is my first post as a first time Mercedes-Benz owner.

I have read all your comments with intrest and agree with much of what you say.

However, as I am now in possesion of the vehicle, I will answer most of the questions you have by way of a 'short' history of this car.

The car is a Mercedes-Benz w116 350SE. (see attached photo)

It was Australian delivered in May 1974 from Lanes Motors in Melbourne.

It is a one owner (my father), always garaged car, and full service history.

It spent the first 20 years of its life in Melbourne before retiring to northern NSW with the owner.

Following a minor rear end accident, the owner decided to respray with 2 pack while the repair was being done.

This repair/respray was done in Melbourne (not Gold Coast).

There is a small amount of rust starting to show on the LH rear quarter panel, probably as a result of this repair, which is being attended to as I write.

Having viewed the car, Shannons have agreed to insure it for $14,000.

The car is currently undergoing Roadworthy checks/repairs for registration in Victoria.

Work need to make this car roadworthy:

Front discs (undersize)
Front calipers (kit)
Rear brake hose
Auto service due to a slight leak
Tyres

and!! Injectors leaking!!!

Everything else seems to be working.

I will soon start a new thread with questions about the injectors and look forward to getting some help from those with far more experience than I can only ever hope to have.

Looking forward to being a part of this community.

Regards Andrew.

Welcome to TK Andrew! And what a VERY nice W116 you have there. I think I have your spare hubcaps (even in the same colour)!!!! If that's all you need for a RWC, you're doing very well..... Looking forward to hearing all about the car and your MB experience. :) BTW a while ago I was quoted the best part of $1K to recondition a 6.9 radiator. I'd hate to think how much a new one would be, or even an OEM one. If I was tight (and didn't care about my cars) it'd be a can of goop instead. This thread just goes to show that you should be mindfull of comments, as you never know who's going to read it, or who's going to join up...
