After 47-48 years of sustained use the key barrel for the vehicles ignition was in a state where it was not fit for correct function.

Due to the key and corresponding lock leaves wearing throughout the course of time. The end result was a barrel which had leaves that were not recessing enough to enable proper, turning function of the ignition barrel.

Full disassembly of each leave and a visual diagram that I drew up myself for reference of each barrel slot, and corresponding leave (numbered) assisted in the disassembly and reassembly of these components.

After disassembly the entire barrel and leaves thoroughly cleaned and bagged up, labeled for the reassembly process (each leave filed individually, installed into the barrel and cross-referenced by installing the key to check that I’ve filed enough down in order for the respective leave to recess fully).

I cannot think of an easy way to describe this process however, I hope the photos do help.

PTFE lubricant was applied to the assembly after it was reassembled.

The end result is a solid feeling ignition barrel that travels freely without binding.
