Once a common sight on country roads in NSW and VIC becuase of their ability to survive harsh conditions and still give good handling and a comfortable ride. Not exactly fast to accellerate but with a cruising speed around 75 mph.
Regards,
Brian
Farmers favourite the Pug upto 505 model where I grew up in Ariah Park that and a lone 240 Ovlov . And a smattering off Statesman / Fairlane with parents and utes for the kids.

Here are some comparable Bentley Mulsanne rear end shots for you to compare Styria.

Hi Patrick, just not quite sure if indeed this Bentley Mulsanne is all that attractive - as a rule, one could be forgiven by being influenced by the name Bentley, and one is inclined to overlook some styling deficiencies simply because it is a Bentley or Rolls Royce. The car featured here just doesn't quite cut the mustard. Regards Styria

I f I could justify spending this amount this car I must say ticks most boxes for me at present other than step up height . It has room for Perth shopping trips for everything including mums wheelchair and that's where step up height is issue . But ticks everything else at $43999 https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/de...-m-class-ml500-auto-4x4/OAG-AD-20360354/?Cr=6
You'd need deep pockets to afford the running costs of this car. All the specs. are obviously spot on, but it would frighten me the moment I'd drive it out of the dealer's yard. See my previous comments in relation to a NEW ML500 that would wear out front tyres as soon as you'd drive it out of your garage - virtually. Can't see how it would be much better when a few years old. Sorry, but that's how I see it. Regards Styria

This at just under 30k is more acceptable in price to me and very desirable having once had a lift in the late WGB 500E I like them a lot plus I was around a few in Cantberra favorite newer Mercedes is the CLS55 but this comes with 80% off the performance without some off the cost including purchase . And as stated I need a large boot or wagon https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/de...00-avantgarde-auto-my08/OAG-AD-20281718/?Cr=8
Hi Geoff, for a change, this is one Mercedes Benz that I DO like - nicely kept, well maintained, hopefully with an up to date service record and a fantastically low mileage - if someone like Helmet would inspect a car like this and give it the thumbs up sign, it would constitute an excellent buy - a lot of car for the money. This is just beautiful. Regards Styria

Like but with reservations. Michelotti like styling with those huge rear fins a la Austins and Morrises, but not all that attractive even given its "classic" status. There would have to be better around. Regards Styria

Given Patrick's penchant for "perfection" at all times, this car falls well short. It may be rare, but that's about it. When buying a car like this, have a look at the surroundings and unless you're absolutely smitten by whatever reason, you would just have to walk away _ I'd imagine Patrick would, and I would concur. Regards Styria

Perhaps you might prefer the cabriolet version?

Styria,
The names are still very special, but under German ownership, these cars have lost their spark, their style and they certainly have lost their mystique.

Only special people could afford these cars, and it was the demographic of these special people that determined the style, look and especially the ambiance.
These new models, while still somewhat special, certainly don’t have ambiance.

If you open the door of any New Phantom (VII or VIII) The interior just doesn’t have that special look, feel and smell that we all know and love.

These cars are way to clinical, and just not special any more.

You knew if you saw a Rolls-Royce or Bentley driving past in the 70’s, 80’s or earlier, that there was someone special inside, a real wow factor.

Now, anyone with deep pockets or a good bank manager can lease one and hand it back when they have ruined it.

BenzBoy, when I used to live in Moree back in the earlish sixties, {Peugeots had attained a fabulous reputation for toughness and for handling the various dirt roads in the country). In those days, the trip from Moree to Boggabilla was about (from memory) 80 kilometers, all dirt road. At the time, I had my Rover 90 1956 model, and I would chug along at about 60 - 70 kms. and on more than one occasion I would have 404s passing me doing at least twenty kms. more that what I could comfortably manage. The highway was well rutted, plenty of rocks and gravel and even Semis would be hurtling along doing about eighty to 100. Regarding interiors, the 505 had absolutely beautifully comfortable seats (real armchairs), very similar to the Renault 16 of that period - probably a much underrated car - well, nowadays no one really cares for them, yet they were a good, versatile car. Regards Styria

Patrick, my only experience and knowledge of the Rolls Royce and Bentley cars is restricted to the various shows that I have attended from time to time, such as RR Concours at Vaucluse House and the Park at Guildford, plus the all British Day at the kings School. Those events have never disappointed me, and indeed, I have seen many examples that I would love to call my own. I think that probably the Bentley S Continental of 1965 is probably my favourite - it's got just about everything that I find desirable. Regards Styria

N.B. Come to think of it, there are precious few occasions when you see either a Rolls Royce or Bentley on the road nowadays.

I agree mate.
Except for inner city Sydney or Melbourne, you sure don’t see many.
A classic Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow or Silver Spirit still turn more heads than any of the current crop of cars from Rolls-Royce.

They used to be quite common sites out in some regional centres such as Tamworth and Dubbo.
Now, the SUV or four wheel drive rules out there.

It’s a real shame that these glorious names of Great Britain were simply sold off to the highest bidder, no matter where they were from.

I really would like to see the reactions of the hero’s that battled with the Germans in two world wars upon hearing that they now own the two most prestigious British names ever.

Yes,
Those shows you mentioned were all good.
I will post some pics of my Shadow taken at all three you mentioned some time in the future.

Four W116's about to finish on grays online today:

1) 1977 280SE: https://www.grays.com/lot/0001-2008...mercedes-benz-280-se-automatic-sedan?spr=true
Looks like a good project if cheap enough, but needs a tilt tray. Ikon gold is a great colour. Has a nice interior, still with original becker. Has rear headrests, either from a wreched 280SEL or a rare option on a 280SE. 11602422093167

typical for grays, the photos are terrible and very low res.

1977 450SEL: https://www.grays.com/lot/0001-10316226/
this car looks ok on the surface, but the more you look at the photos, the more you see what is wrong with it. Cheap respray, interior cobbled together from multiple cars etc etc. I suspect there will be buyers remorse here. 11603322063264

33793797.jpg33793801.jpg33793808.jpg

1978 280SEL: https://www.grays.com/lot/0001-6001...mercedes-benz-280sel-automatic-sedan?spr=true
The green interior is rare and cool, but I would be worry about the tip of a rust berg on this car. That rear bumper is seriously rusty and there are a couple of other spots you can see in the low res grays photos that would make me think the rust goes deep. There are also a number of faults in that interior that would be hard to sort given how rare green is. 11602522118306

33895559.jpg33895563.jpg33895570.jpg

1980 280SEL: https://www.grays.com/lot/0001-20080192/
Probably one of the last ones imported (12/80 compliance). A really nice car in an attractive colour combo. My only real fault with it is that its not fully optioned up and the sixes are better in SWB form in my view. 11602522156420. Painted hubcaps better than the alloys of this period. I suspect the odometer stopped at some point, as while its clearly a low mileage car, I suspect its double what is shown.

Gents,
This looks like a well presented car.
Also, very well prepared and photographed.
Yes, lovely car in a great colour. A UK import with the high output engine but NO AC which would be a deal breaker for me.
