Another curious thing...

While Lady Augusta (W124) is in the car spa having a body rub and facial, Lady Genevieve is out and about.

A curious thing has happened, the odometer has stopped turning even though the speedometer is fine. I had the cluster out and eveything seemed to be in order. The gearwheels have all their teeth, unlike me! and the mechanism is well lubed.

Any suggestions?

Hi Martin, sorry to hear of your missing teeth ! We know how to fix them, but the odometer is a different story. It is not unusual for it to fail, and hitherto I have simply replaced the whole speedo. Rectification I would normally leave to my Instrument Repairer so, in reality, any advice from me would be useless. Sorry about that, but others may have more of an idea. Regards Styria

Yes, she was born on 12th November 1975. Just a spritely young thing compared to some!

Des, you're a star. That pictorial will help me trouble shoot. Visually everything looks good on my odometer so it must be something obvious!

Lets share a thought here, in the morning the odometer works, after the day has warmed a bit it doesn't.

Could this be something to do with the grease becoming sticky as it warms?

Well, it turns out that the white metal wheel was slipping in the axle. A drop of superglue has solved that. Don't try to fix it using superglue gel....to doesnt run onto the axle...I found out the hard way and unnecessarily spent money.

Thanks for that Martin and others, the odo on my regular car has been doing the same thing (works in negative tempreatures only) - shall investigate.

Something to try before you pull your car to pieces is to reset the trip computer a few times, by holding the button in for a few seconds, when the car is stopped (should never do it when the car is moving anyway as this can cause these sort of problems)

I have found on a Benz once and the Golf that sometimes the numbers will stick, but resetting the trip computer kicks them into gear again,

try that first.
